Drifting

I sat on my bed staring out the window. The sound of the door snapped me from my thoughts as I glanced up to see Miguel.

'Hey, you still looking out the window? Are you okay?'

'Oh, yeah. I guess I lost track of time, sorry,' I muttered. It was happening more frequently lately.

'I made dinner,' he said. He knelt down and took my hands.

'Hey, you with me, darling?'

'Yeah, sorry. Just finding it hard to stay in the present,' his smile brought me back somewhat.

He kissed my hands and helped me stand up.

'Come on, let's get some dinner.'

I sat at the table and tried my hardest to stay focused.

'I just want to stop drifting.'

'We'll figure it out together, baby,' he said. He sat beside me once placing a plate in front of me.

'You know I love you, right?' I whispered. His hand went under the table and gently squeezed my thigh.

'I know. I love you too, and I'm here to help.'

We ate dinner. Miguel was chatting but I could barely hear it. I was just constantly floating between here and every other moment in my life.

'Baby, stay with me,' Miguel said. He held my hand as I looked down and realised I hadn't eaten any of my food.

'Let's just take it slow,' he said. He smiled and helped me start to eat. Guiding me through every bite as he asked me questions in between to keep me present.

Once I had finished dinner I stood up and helped Miguel start to clean up.

Miguel started some music and slowly pulled you into his chest. He swayed back and forth with the music, keeping a tight hold on you.

'Doesn't matter where you drift to, I'll always find you, okay?' you felt like you could cry just from what he said.

'Promise?'

'I promise, baby.'
