Chapter 7

“Well, today is your last day of junior year. It was a pleasure having some of you in my class, and for the rest of you get out of my classroom!” Mr. Ortega, Drake’s English teacher, said to the class.

It had been about a week that Drake had returned to school. The teacher’s strike was over. Since the teachers had given their students packets of homework to do while the strike took place, Drake didn’t have to go to summer school.

“Drake, would you come here a minute?” Mr. Ortega smiled as Drake walked over to his desk.

“It has been an honor having you in my class. I hope to see you graduate with honors next year. Have you talked to the counselors about college?” Mr. Ortega had taken a liking to Drake, because the boy loved to read and write. Since Mr. Ortega didn’t have kids of his own, he saw Drake as the son he wish he had.

“No, not yet but Mr. Smith told me to go to him as soon as senior year started.” Drake slung his backpack over his shoulder.

“Ah, alright well have a good summer and stay out of trouble.” Mr. Ortega patted Drake on the back and the boy smiled back as he left the classroom.

People were excited that school was finally over and that summer had began, but Drake didn’t feel that happy. If school was over, that meant that he would be at home the entire day. Also, it meant that Damien would be home as well.

After Damien’s kickback a week ago, Drake had been ignoring the boy’s texts. He would tape messages on Drake’s window saying that he was sorry and needed to talk to him. Since the messages would only get crumbled and tossed in the trash, Damien started calling Drake’s house. After the many missed phone calls, Damien would come over and try to talk to him.

Drake needed time to get his head around the fact that Damien had kissed him; and that he had kissed him back. He asked his dad to tell him he was away for the week, and Luciano just nodded, worried about his son.

But now that it was summer school, Drake didn’t have a place to hide at. He really didn’t like the idea of hiding, but he couldn’t really help it. He had been humiliated.

Taken a deep breath, Drake walked home. It had been a long day and all he wanted was to lay on his bed blasting his music.

His phone buzzed and Drake looked down, with a groan.

How long will you keep avoiding me? –Damien

As long as it takes, he thought to himself and texted back,

You’re not the center of my world, you know. What makes you think I’m avoiding you? –Drake

“Hey Drake,” He turned to see some of the girls in his class call him; about six of them. They were all giggling and in matter of seconds they surrounded him.

“We were wondering if you wanted to hang out this summer,” A brunette one said as she bit her lip.

Drake raised an eyebrow and looked at them. What happen to them ignoring me? He didn’t understand why they were talking to him after ignoring him the entire school year.

“Ah, I guess.” He shrugged.

“Awesome!” A blonde petite jumped and smiled up at him. She got on her tip toes and kissed his cheek.

“See, I told you he wasn’t as intimidating as the guys said. Plus, he’s the cutest guy in class.” He heard one of them murmur as they all walked away, glancing back at him from time to time.

Drake shook his head and continued walking. Today he had plans with Adrian.

Adrian was the only one Drake talked to after the party. He had apologized for his friend, but Drake just shook his head telling him that it was no big deal. They had been hanging out and talking about Drake joining his band. Adrian loved the way Drake sang, and so did the rest of his band.
