A Game of Lies

Mother II

Lewyn stood, and so did Jaime, and to Jaime's surprise, Lewyn's arms wrapped around him, tightly.

"I love you, father. I'm sorry for how I've been behaving", Lewyn whispered quietly.

Jaime's arm's wrapped around his boy then, and he hugged him back, even tighter. It was only when he glanced up, to see the annoyed look on Prince Oberyn's face, the man's jaw tight, that he pulled away.

"Go on, now", he said with a smile, and Lewyn left.

Jaime sat back down, then, watching as Oberyn watched the boy leave.

"What did you tell him?", the Dornish man asked.

"I never knew his mother's name. She'd laid him into my arms, made me promise to keep him safe, and I never saw her again", Jaime recited.

"All but the first part, is honesty", Prince Oberyn replied, taking Lewyn's seat, across from Jaime. The Dornishman could see the guilt and shame in Jaime's eyes.

Jaime shook his head.

"It's all a lie, Oberyn. That boy's whole life is one big lie. I've never been honest with him. In truth, he doesn't even know his own life. He doesn't even know me. I'm a stranger-", Jaime said, shaking his head sadly.

"Without you...", Oberyn began, looking to the ground, "he'd be dead. We both know it", he said.

Jaime looked to Oberyn. He understood the man's bitter feelings towards him. The jealousy. But when need be, it was surprising how Oberyn would attempt to reassure or comfort Jaime.

"I just wish things had been different", Jaime said, and Oberyn gave a chuckle.

"Do you, Ser Jaime? If things had been different, if things ever change..", Oberyn asked, his eyebrow raised.

Jaime silent. But in his mind, he knew what would happen, if things changed. If the boy ever knew. He'd still love him fiercely, and would even after he took his last breath.

He'd always love his son.
