Maybe all the strings inside him broke.

→ When they were nine years old, Margo and Quentin went to a park and saw a man hanging from a tree. Later that night, Margo visited Q's window. She tells him she did some investigating on the dead man they saw in the park. This quote serves as the explanation for Margo as to why the man did what he did.

→ In this context, the quote explains that the man had nothing to hold on to anymore. It's a metaphor of connection, of having things and people to hold on to. It says something about brokenness not being a matter of immediate decision but more of a „how much longer can I do it"-process. I think it shows a lot of realness which is that there are endless situations and instances in which we break, in which these things take something from us that we most often do not get back.
