Chapter 35
"Anna Summers."
I sluggishly stirred from my sleep as my mom anxiously tapped my shoulder.
"Wha-?" I asked, disoriented.
"It's your turn already! Come on, Anna." She rushed.
I reluctantly stood up and trailed behind my frantic mother. We were at the hospital, going through my checkup. I had cut school to come here, which was a major plus point, seeing that I was able to wing it through my math test.
When we entered Room 375, the doctor greeted us with a Cheshire smile. That was probably an understatement. His eyes looked as if they were grinning at us too. Overall, the whole 'over-friendly' expression sent shivers down my spine. I was totally clueless on what was in store for me.
"Good evening, ma'am. You must be Anna Summers. Take a seat," he said, glancing down at his notes. He looks like he is in his mid-thirties, tall with brown hair. His eyes were a shade of grey, and at certain angles, they looked blue.
"Yes, sir. I'm the one and only Anna Summers," I said jokingly.
Mom forced a tight smile at me and I grinned back innocently.
"That's great. I'm Dr Perkins, nice to meet you."
I shook his hand uncertainly. Why was he being awkwardly nice?
"Alright, so Anna. I heard that you have had fainting spells for the past few months?"
I bit my lip. "Yeah."
"Do you want to explain how you got to that stage of fainting?"
Could I even say no? I closed my eyes, hoping that this was all a dream. This felt like a police station, not the hospital.
"Well, in the moments that I fainted, I felt high anxiety and stress. I guess I worry too much."
I added the last line, hoping that it was the root of my problem and that I was free to go already.
Dr Perkins scribbled down stuff onto his notes.
Suddenly, my fingers felt numb, like they were yesterday. I vigorously shook my arm, trying to get blood to flow through.
Unfortunately, Dr Perkins noticed my word movement. "What's wrong?"
"Uh, my fingers are numb. I don't know why, but I've been having such... Discomfort recently." I choked out.
Something lit up in those grey orbs of his. I gave him an unsure look. I don't see how numb fingers could help in any form of diagnosis.
Dr Perkins stared down as his notes, then back to me. He did this for a few times, then turned to look at my mom.
"Mrs Summers, if it's okay with you, I would like to run a blood test through Anna. I think that would be more accurate." He said thoughtfully.
Mom looked anxious. "Why, doctor? Do you suspect that she has any form of sickness?"
"As of now, yes, but I am not in a position to tell you yet as it is not confirmed."
Mom looked as if she was about to have a heart attack. "Oh my goodness."
I ran a hand down her back. "I'm going to be fine, mom. The blood test is going to return negative in whatever they are testing for."
"How can you be so sure?"
"It's my body, mom."
Dr Perkins cleared his throat. "Anna, could you come over here for a moment?"
