Chapter 38
"Hey, can we meet later? After dinner?" I asked Dakota as I unfastened my seat belt. School had passed in a daze. I practically hid from everyone and anyone by staying in the library for lunch break, with my tracker tucked safely in my back pocket.
Dakota cut the engine and turned to face me. He stared at me oddly. "Sure, why?"
"I have something important to tell you."
Seriousness was written all over his face. "Okay..."
An awkward silence settled in the car. I quickly reached for the latch and opened the car door. "Thanks for the ride and see you later."
Just as I got ready to get out of the car, he stopped me by putting a hand on my left arm.
"Wait! Where do we meet?" He questioned.
"The park, under the oak tree."
He nodded and I got out of the car, waving goodbye to him. He smiled and waved, then turned around and walked up his yard, while I walked up mine.
I walked through the front door to see mom in the hall, reading a book. It was pretty rare to see my mom read a book, where all she usually does is house chores or cooking.
"I'm back, mom," I greeted as I made my way to the stairs.
She quickly looked up from her book and snapped it shut. "Hello, dear."
I looked down and took the stairs two at a time. I locked the door to my room and threw myself on the bed.
I could have sworn that my mom was reading a book titled 'All About Diabetes'.

I didn't realise that I had fallen asleep until it was dinner time. The tracker in my back pocket beeped, waking me up.
My eyes fluttered open, my head disoriented. I pulled out my tracker from my back pocket and discovered that it was already seven. I punched in some information, and the tracker gave a satisfied beep.
I took a quick shower and chose something warm to wear, as I'll be going to the park later on. I settled for a pair of black yoga pants and a woollen shirt whose sleeves came right to my elbows.
I entered the kitchen to find Amber already at the table, typing a text.
"Hey Amber."
"Hey." She glanced up, then smiled. "Why are you all dressed up?"
I shrugged. "I'm going out after dinner."
A look of horror flashed across her face. "That won't do!"
"What won't do?" I asked, confused.
"What you're wearing! Oh my gosh, Anna, I think I should give you some fashion lessons. Just for the fashionably challenged," she finished, still looking me up and down with distaste.
I shook my head and laughed. "I'm just going to the park for fresh air, Amber, I'm not going to a club or whatever you are thinking of."
"Well you should have told me at the start," she threw her hands up in annoyance.
"My dear, dear Amber." I said with a laugh. "If I ever need fashion advice, I'll know who to go to."
Amber gave me a proud smile and returned to texting. Suddenly, something buzzed in my pocket. I took out both my tracker and phone, wondering which one had vibrated.
Apparently I had to do this almost every time when either one of them buzzed. It was much of a burden, but I still had to do it.
I unlocked my phone to find a text from Dakota.
