Chapter 46

"So, do you have any plans for your birthday?"

I cast a lazy look at Elle, who was staring intently at me. She had been blabbering non-stop for over an hour and I had tuned out just five minutes after she had started. That was probably due to the fact that I had caught her cheating on me three nights before. Actually, she wasn't cheating on me as Dakota had broken up with me but still. Who goes after your best friend's ex boyfriend?

Elle did not know about what I saw, and frankly, I didn't want to tell her. She's still my friend after all and I'd rather have one friend than have none at all.

I raised my eyebrow as Elle continued staring at me. "Hmm?"

"Gosh, Anna. Have you been listening to what I've been saying all this while?" When she saw my sheepish smile, she fumed. "This is important; please listen to me! Have you any plans for your birthday yet?"

"Not that I know of."

Elle's angry expression morphed into a softer one. "Great!" She clapped her hands together like how a happy seal would.

"Why?" I questioned, suspicious. What has Elle got up her sleeve now? A surprise to tell me that Dakota and her are a couple now?

A hint of smile played at her lips. "You'll see."

She picked up her book bag and left, towards the left wing of the school. She has biology lessons now, while I have math.

I lazily dragged my feet to math class and plopped into my seat. Adam was already in his seat and he turned to look at me with a smile.

"Well, someone's happy today, huh?" I smirked.

"Yeah, kinda. I guess that's how you feel when you scored captaincy on the swim team." He drawled, trying not to sound overly excited, like obtaining captaincy is just another thing on his to-do list.

My mouth formed the shape of an 'O'. "Seriously? Congratulations!"

"That's the up-side of being captain. But there is also the down-side. I'll have lesser time on my own now, lots of administrative work and trying to get my team in perfect shape."

"Don't worry about that, your team is already in perfect shape. I've seen them swimming every practice, and I swear, their the best in the state. Go team!"

"You're just saying that 'cos you're in the girls' team right?"

"Nah, it's the truth. We're picking our new captain this week. I'll be dropping off my vote after swim practice today."

Adam reached into his bag to take out a load of files. "Oh really? So who's got your vote?"

I looked down at my hands, thinking hard. I still have yet to decide on who will be our next captain. I had narrowed down my options to Jill and Fanny. They are both great swimmers and are obvious candidates for the captaincy on the team. Jill can be a little impatient at times, and Fanny could be a little too quiet.

"I'm not sure yet."

Adam smiled, and it reached his eyes. "Well, let me know who is the fresh captain soon. I want to know who my partner-in-crime is."

"Partner-in-crime? What do you do? Steal swimsuits?"

"Shoot, how did you figure it out so fast?" He laughed.

When I didn't reply, his laugh dissolved, but he was still smiling, his blue eyes glistening with a hint of tears. "I just want you to know that if I could vote for the captaincy of the girls' team, I'd surely vote for you. We can steal swimsuits!"
