"When darkness comes I'll light the night with stars
Hear the whispers in the dark
No
You'll never be alone
When darkness comes you know I'm never far
Hear the whispers in the dark
Whispers in the dark."
- "Whispers in the Dark" by Skillet

"Listen, Aoi," Hardened eyes of a frigid azure hue gazed impassively at the elder, lips compressed into a stern, dauntless line.

"No matter the consequences, I expect you to succeed. There is no turning back; no cowering whatever the situation, the predicament you might come to once you accept.

"Our association-- No, our entire world is at stake. Do whatever you need to do. As long as you eradicate the threat. Understood?"

Solemnly, the impassive fifteen-year-old nodded.

There is no hope for her future if she fails. The abomination must cease to exist at all costs.

She stood there, dimly aware of the challenges she might face - the sacrifices she must make in order to succeed. Dull, yet somehow conflicted oculars stared at the luminescent crescent set into the dark, starless sky.

"Who is my target... Father?" A single inquiry, spoken in as flat a tone she could utter sent the older man into a state of calm satisfaction.

"An unknown creature who single-handedly demolished three-fourths of the moon -- the alien known as 'Korosensei'."

A small, nearly unnoticeable smile quirked her father's lips upward as he strode toward his daughter's rigid form. Placing a hand on her uniformed shoulder, he whispered the following words:

"I trust that you may be able to give your lineage as a Hanazono justice, Aoi." His gaze hardened, venom lacing his words. "I will not tolerate yet another failure like what occurred nearly four years past."

She stiffened; her hands clenched into tight fists as she replied with forced obedience.

"Of course. I will make you proud, Father."

"Very well. 'Treis' and 'Novem' shall debrief you regarding the details of your mission. Oh, and one last thing, Aoi,"

The young girl glanced at her father, whose icy stare bore into her own cerulean eyes.

"Under any circumstances, you are not to disclose the contents of your assignment to anyone. Not even him."

Her jaw clenched in utmost loathing as a familiar face flickered through her mind's eye. It had been three, nearly four years since she had last seen him - would he have changed for the worse?

"I have no need to reassure you that I won't violate the rule, Father. You most certainly know of my predicament, don't you?"

Yet another smile graced the elder's lips. "That may change soon enough, my dear daughter. After all, three years is quite a long time for one to take a turn for the better. Especially when the one at hand is your dearest friend."

Aoi's eyes narrowed, as she tenaciously took a step back. "Is that sarcasm I hear, Father?"

"It depends, Aoi. Now, you'll be staying at their house; I take it you will have no qualms about this arrange--"

"No, Father. I refuse to go anywhere near him.

"Not after he turned his back on me after Mother died."
