The room was full to bursting with people as Thor walked up the steps to the throne. Even though he had already be claimed king of Asgard, it wasn't until a good few months later that he actually had a coronation ceremony.
I watched as a council elder place the crown on his head and thought about how déjà vu this was. Years ago this was supposed to happen. Years ago we stood here for his coronation.
Except this time there were no rude interruptions.
I leaned into Loki, who had his fingers intertwined with mine. He was dressed in fine armour with the badge of the king's advisor pinned to the fabric of his shirt. Yes, he had been given a promotion. Thor had given it to him just days before his own coronation to give Loki some spotlight. Not that he hadn't had any in the time leading up to today.
After Thanos was destroyed we returned to find no one in Asgard had really noticed. We had received word from a few other galaxies, getting their thanks, but all together our success was quiet and the nine realms peaceful. I didn't mind though, I'd had enough heroics and action for a lifetime. Loki got more attention than anything, since he was supposed to be dead and all. But eventually people came to their own conclusions and accepted him as Thor's chief advisor.
Slowly we both began to rekindle our friendships with Fandral, Volstagg and even Sif. It was going to be a long process to fully be friends like we used to, but we had centuries to do this. I wasn't worried.
Loki and I were also working on our own relationship. It wasn't easy. Loki had to deal with what had happened to him and there were days where it was hard to be with him. But we were making progress. At first, we had considered leaving Asgard and going somewhere else for a while, a change of scene. I especially needed to take a breather. But Thor persuaded Loki to stay and help him govern the realms, and there was no question of us separating. So here we stayed.
I glanced down to our intertwined fingers, down to the glittering ring on my left hand. The band was gold with a large princess cut diamond surrounded by two small rows of emeralds. My engagement ring, which apparently Loki had had made for quite some time. We weren't planning on tying the knot anytime soon, but we wanted to be engaged. And Loki was actually very tired of having to hold on to this ring.
As for my father, we had him buried and an effigy was made for him in the royal tombs for his bravery and service to the realms. I visited every so often to try to come to terms with our short relationship and sometimes Loki would tag along for support. I mourned for a while, but it was getting better.
Every day we were getting better and better.
