Sky's Point of View
Jason and I walked along side the fence lines until we reached the gate and walked inside. I've been here for two days and I'm still getting weird stares like I'm gonna kill someone.
"Hey um Jason." I said meekly while brushing a stray bang behind my right ear.
"What's the matter? Getting tired of the fearful and awkward looks." He said with a small smirk.
"Yesssss!" I dragged out throwing my hands in the air then to my sides. "Am I really that intimidating?"
He looked at me briefly and smiled. "Oh yeah." He said with one eye brow raised.
"Oh yeah cause a girl five foot five is scarier than the dead things lurking around." I said in a 'duh' tone.
He chuckled at my comment as we neared the meeting house.. "They're just scared of who you are. We don't really know you enough to judge you. You haven't relaxed around us really either. We've had people come in and try and take this from us. Which didn't end well for them. We lost people and lost some supplies and buildings. Plus the dead piled up on the fence which toon forever to clean off. So of course they are gonna be on edge. Just try and make friends with them. Everyone here is nice they just are afraid. I mean can you blame any of us for being afraid. Like when we found you on the highway. I wasn't to sure if it was a good idea to bring you back inside our walls. But I gave in and now I see that it was a good decision."
I opened my mouth to speak but we had reached the entrance to the meeting house and were walking inside.
"Hey Barb." Jason said to the sweet looking middle aged women behind a desk.
"Hi ya dear what do you need." She said smiling from ear to ear. Her reading glasses sat on the bridge of her nose and the chain that was on the end of them dangled loosely.
"I'm here to see what our newcomers chores are." Jason smiled leaning against the desk.
"Oh sure dear what's the name?" She asked.
"Sky Banks." He simply replied flashing me glance over his shoulder that made me smile.
"Ah here we are." Barb said handing Jason a Manila portfolio. Inside was a stack of papers paper clipped together and to the folder so they wouldn't fall out.
"Thank you." Jason smiled and I waved my thanks to the nice lady.
"Anytime dear be careful out there, both of you." Barb waved us off before returning to her work.
Once we exited the building Jason sat down on the porch. His feet touching the ground, mine dangled above the ground with room to spare. Allowing me to kick back and forth with them.
I heard a snicker to my right causing me to look over at Jason. "What?" I asked.
"You're so damn short." He smiled.
I stuck my tongue out at him. "I'm sorry you're a fucking giant."
"Easy now Rambo." He said causing us both to laugh. "All right you are in charge of food and water delivery, and taking a head count every day." He said getting back to the task at hand.
"That's it?" I asked looking at the papers myself. Reading over each of their descriptions, even tho they were self explanatory. "So I just put the food and water assigned to each cabin at the front door and take a head count as I go through to see who is all here?"
"Pretty much. It's the two easiest jobs but I say if you wanna get a harder more intense and fun job then do the best you can with this. Be nice to everyone and when it comes for job switch then maybe you will get promoted." Jason said taking the papers back from my hands and putting them in the folder.
"What other jobs are there?" I asked curiosity was always my worst enemy.
"Well the highest are supply runs, then guard, then fence cleaner, then weapon approval and hand out, they're probably the highest responsibility." He said naming a few jobs.
"Well what is your job?" I asked again.
"Do you ever stop asking questions?" He asked and I shrugged causing him to smile and shake his head. "I'm like Brad's right hand man. And when I'm not out running with him I'm doing runs or on guard."
"So to get to that point I have to be a kiss ass?" I asked and he laughed. "Now when is my next shooting lesson?"
"Tomorrow same time." He answered quickly looking at the lowering sun.
"What about a weapon all I have is my Swiss Army knife. Since my other one was taken." I said feeling for my knife in my pocket to make sure I didn't lose it.
"I'll see what I can work out." He smiled and I smiled back.
"What times do I make my rounds and how often?" I asked
"Head count every day in the morning and night. And food delivery once a week. Usually it's every Wednesday." Jason said back.
"How long have you been here? I don't mean to be nosy I'm just curious and trying to get to know you." I said criss crossing my legs and now facing him.
He took a deep breath. "We should get to bed we have more training tomorrow. Good night." He said before standing and walking off leaving me on the porch dumbfounded.
Well then that was strange. I thought before shaking my head and walking to my cabin. I kept thinking about how Jason avoided my question. I take it what happened was a touchy subject for him. Well it is for all of us but I guess this was harder on him. I just hope I can get it out of him. I opened the door to my home and walked in closing it behind me. None of us were aloud to lock our doors for emergency purposes. Which just like every rule there are both good and bad things to it. I slip out of my shoes and flopped on to the bed. I left out a long exhale as my eyes dropped closed letting sleep have me. I have lived to see another day.
