As the candle is lit,
the pumpkin's face
fills with a warm yellow.
I set it out on the porch,
facing it towards the street,
the sharp eyes overlooking the kids.
It beckons them forth,
where I hand them their reward,
the pumpkin always watching.
After a while,
I blow the light out,
leaving the pumpkin dark and hollow.
