Needless to say, you didn't get much sleep that evening. You'd been ordered only to rest (well... attempt to sleep) for a few hours or so, before "Group A", as Janson had put it, arrived. Harriet had encouraged everyone to settle down and rest for as long as they had. You weren't sure if anyone could sleep, under the constant, incessant wailing screams, which sounded like one of a dying cat's.
The girl who'd you'd spoken to earlier (you still hadn't asked her name) laid down next to you, and you rolled onto your side and forced your eyes closed.
There was no way you'd be sleeping tonight.
Harriet woke you around midnight. Well, she walked around and snapped at people to get up. You hadn't even dozed off, just lay under your sheet, staring up at the dark ceiling.
"Teresa's already ready!" she called. You looked around for Teresa, spotting her a little ways away. Her back was to you, but her black hair was shiny and ran down her shoulders and back. She was dressed in clean clothes (Which had mysteriously been left hidden in a metal box behind a large sand pile, labeled Teresa) and was pacing back and forth, a worried expression plastered onto her pretty face. You felt a pang of sadness, that Thomas was getting used like this, by someone he seemed to genuinely care about. But despite how Teresa had been acting, and her whole "I'll kill Thomas. He needs to pay for what he did to me" routine, she looked scared, and kind of guilty.
"Someone go to the speakers!" Harriet ordered. "Once Thomas comes into view, we need to shut them off. The rest of you, hide!"
It was so dark now, you could barely see three feet in front of you. You stuck your hands out and felt your way up the steps that were positioned in the back of the building.
"I see him!" A girl standing near the open door shouted, pointing out beyond the horizon. Your heart skipped a beat, and you ducked behind the thick pillar you were hiding behind. You were actually going to see your friend for the first time since the Maze. It occurred to you, Thomas and the others probably thought you were dead by now, left paralyzed after the sky had turned grey and they were planning their escape.
You heard scrambling, as girls rushed to their assigned places. All at once, the wailing screams that had been blasted through the warehouse for hours on end stopped. It left your ears ringing and the silence that followed was pure bliss. You stood there for what felt like hours, straining your ears to catch little snippets of their conversation. The crunch of their footsteps against the sand. The creaking of the wooden door as they pushed it open further. Then, you heard Thomas's voice, and you balled your hands into fists. You wanted nothing more than to run out and hug him. Tell him that you weren't dead, and leave these girls to go back with Newt and Minho and Chuck (assuming they were all still alive. You didn't let yourself dwell on it though). You knew you couldn't though because risking the lives of everyone here would just be the stupidest thing you could've done then.
The smell of mildew hung low in the air, and you took in slow, shallow breaths -- so you wouldn't chance Thomas hearing anything. When the door creaked open, you wiped your sweaty palms on your pants and pressed your back hard into the stone pillar.
"Theresa?" His voice rang out clearly, echoing off the rusted metal walls. You froze, muscles tensing, heart leaping into your throat. You heard Teresa sniff like she was crying and trying to stifle it. "Teresa, please. I don't know what's happened or what they did to you, but I'm here now. This is crazy. Just talk to-" Thomas cut off as if someone had thrown a gag over his mouth. You caught sight of a small flame in your peripheral vision, probably one of the matches that had been left out for Teresa, along with a small wooden table. There was silence again, and you threw a hand over your mouth to quiet your heavy breathing. Your friend was standing right there, possibly in mortal danger, and you were hiding.
