Outside Condominium Block D. 700 meters away from the TARDIS.
CHECKING IN, Officer Chikuma typed awkwardly into his personal cell phone. C-BLOCK CLEAR. MOVING ONTO D-BLOCK.
He sent the message and sighed. "This seem right to you? Tokyo-3's finest, texting each other like a bunch of teenage girls?"
Officer Tone shrugged. "You can expense those minutes, you know."
Chikuma raised an eyebrow. "For what, a couple of texts?"
"Sure. Why not?"
"What are we talking about -- like, what, maybe ten yen? Is that even worth the time I'd spend filling out the form?"
"Yen's a yen, man."
"Yeah, okay, maybe..." The police officer pocketed his cell phone and drew his pistol. "Anyway... you ready?"
Tone nodded. They kicked open the front door to the condo block and moved in.
The lobby was empty, of course. Most of the complexes in this neighborhood were. Whether it was because the condos hadn't been allocated yet by the city, or their owners had decided to stay evacuated, Chikume had no idea. All he knew was that searching them was proving to be a major pain in his rear. Seriously, what a clown show. Radios down, computers screwed up, dispatch barely even working... but here they were, all the same, hunting down some vague report of gunfire. Just because some higher-up had flagged it for attention.
They reached the first condo. Chikume signaled his partner, then keyed in the override code. The automatic door slid open. They entered the main room, guns raised.
They both knew the layout of these two-bedroomers by heart at this point. Tone went left; Chikume went right. He checked the bedroom and bathroom on his side. "Clear!" he shouted.
"Clear," Tone responded from the other end.
They met back up in the empty condo's main room. "One down, twenty to go," Chikuma muttered. He holstered his gun.
Tone cocked his head. "You think we'll get hazard pay for this? Working with the support systems down and all?"
Chikume gave him a look. "What's with this whole stinginess kick you've been on?"
"When the times are uncertain, it pays to save, my friend."
"If you say so..." Save for what? Chikuma wondered. It's not like money would be worth a damn if the Angels won, right? He shook his head.
They headed for the door. Which slid shut as they approached.
This surprised Chikuma for two reasons. First, the entrance wasn't supposed to shut until he entered the override again. Second, someone had scrawled on the back of the door in what looked like bright red lipstick: SORRY! (=^_^=)
Chikuma's first thought, oddly enough, was: who the hell handwrites one of those text face things? (What were they called? Emo-icons, something like that?) Followed shortly by: crap! He reached for his gun. He saw a flash in the corner of his eye, something that looked like red silk. He drew the pistol, but too late -- something collided with the side of his head. He heard Tone shout a curse in the background as everything went dark.
