In speech and writing, it's a slang term used to refer to stories that focus on homosexual relationships, usually between men. Yaoi tends to involve graphic sex, often with little or no plot. A related genre is shonen-ai, or "boy's love", which tends to involve less sex and more cuddling (and plot).
Despite the fact that the definition says 'Yaoi tends to involve graphic sex, often with little or no plot.' Most people just refer to in the BoyxBoy sense and if you look for it on Wattpad unless you type Yaoi Lemon, you will most likely get YAOI fluff.
