Nothing Like Them

19 3 3

You and I are nothing like them,
Nothing like them at all.
Birds of the same feather flock together
And together we are alone.

Time is cruel when growing up
Time is cold as steel;
And when the blade comes whooshing down
Brought to the knees are our peers.

But with a vengeance they get up again
Up again, they rise;
With unfamiliar plumage, they soar
We don't know them anymore.

Different from them are you and I,
Most different from them we are.
The sword bounces off our skin with a clang,
We walk away safe and sound.

Our down is shed, our feathers sprout
But our colors remain the same.
We wear these shades of youth with pride;
To change, we do resist.

And should we be shunned for who we are
Or who we didn't become,
I won't leave your side, I won't
Forever, I will hold your hand.
