A girl sits down
next to me
at lunch today -
which is strange,
because even after
a whole week of school,
most everyone still avoids me
like the plague.

It's obvious
from her demeanor
that she isn't someone
who would take
such a big hit
to her reputation
by sitting next to someone
like me.
She looks young for her age
(I assume that it's
the same as mine),
and has choppy brown hair
down to her chin
and glasses perched precariously
on her nose.
I've never seen her
before today,
not even in passing
in the hallways.
She looks more like
the type of person who would
hide herself away
with a book
instead of talking to people,
so maybe that explains it.

Then again,
I don't want to fall victim
to stereotyping strangers -
because I already know
how awful it feels
when they end up
making the wrong assumptions.

But regardless of her
possible hobbies,
here she is now.
She smiles shyly at me
as she sits down,
but says nothing.
I don't say anything
either,
so we pass the time
in silence,
eating our lunches
and avoiding the
intruding stares
of the other students.
Or maybe that's
just me.

When lunch ends,
she smiles again
as she stands up
to leave.
"Thanks for letting me
sit with you,"
she says quietly
before turning
towards the hallways
and disappearing
from my view.

I don't know what
that was about,
but I think she might
have been the
very first person
in this school
to be kind to me -
or at least refrain
from openly judging me
based on my appearance.

Besides my mother,
she might have been
the first person
ever -
and that means
so much more
than she'd ever know.
