winter

The weather is starting
to cool rather early
this year -
or maybe it's just
how Ohio's weather
works.
Either way,
it's with some surprise
that I walk outside today,
shiver,
and promptly duck
back inside for
a jacket.

My mother
once again offers
to drive me to school -
but a quick glance
at the clock
over the kitchen sink
shoots down that suggestion
in a hurry.
With an apologetic smile,
she sprints out
to her car
and almost trips
over her high heels
in the process.
I've told her
too many times to count
not to wear them -
much less run in them -
as she seems to have
an unconscious penchant
for accidentally hurting herself
in a variety of ways
while wearing them.
But does she
ever listen to me?

I swear,
sometimes
I feel
as though I
have to take care
of her
more than she
has to take care
of me.

A few minutes later,
I'm on my way
to the hell
I know so well
as school.
I'm not too used
to cold weather
these days,
considering we last lived
in Alabama
and the weather there
was warm
and summer-like
all year long.
Everyone else I see
on the street
is still in their summer
shorts and t-shirts,
enjoying the 'nice weather,'
while I'm clad in
my usual jeans,
a sweatshirt
and my jacket over it all.

The wind blows
across the back of
my neck,
and I shiver again
inadvertently.
I don't like winter,
or the cold,
or snow -
all of which
I've heard
we'll soon have here.
Wonderful.

I used to enjoy it,
back when I
was much younger,
and would build
snowmen
with my mother and father
in our little backyard
of the house we lived in
in Rhode Island.
But those days are
long gone,
and walking in the cold
doesn't really
appeal to me any more.
That, and I'm not
entirely
used to having such
short hair.

That's pretty off-topic,
but considering I only
cut my hair off
around a year ago,
it still comes as a surprise that
there's nothing there
to protect my neck from
the wind and chill.
I get cold
very easily
as a general rule -
but my neck
especially does now,
and it's rather...
cold,
obviously.

Don't get me wrong -
I prefer my hair like this,
but sometimes
I miss not having to
wear a scarf
in the height of winter.
I also miss
the warm weather
I lived in
for a year
previously.
Maybe that's
the real issue
here.
I really hate
winter,
almost more so than
the people I
go to school with,
who are already accustomed to
its tragic lack of
natural warmth.

It's not even halfway
into autumn yet -
but I'm already
completely
sick of it.

This was a completely useless chapter, but oh well. The next few chapters will be full of drama, though, never fear. It's gonna be great. Yyyyyeah.

If you guys liked this weird-ass chapter about winter and hair and whatever the heckie that all was, feel free to vote and leave me some feedback below! It'd be much appreciated!! c:

(Also excuse how completely strange this author's note is, I just woke up and I've been so sleep-deprived lately... Wow.)
