5 - The Girl

"Come, come to the place where regrets eat!"

"Where peace sleeps. Where memories feast!"

The song grew louder as Andrew squeezed his way down toward the light. He reached the bend and turned.

He squinted at the light, the heat. He was sweating now.

Then, he saw her.

She was small, half his size, maybe. Her eyes were weary little mirrors, staring into his soul. They reminded him of himself before himself ran out at around ten o'clock in the morning, creased with hunger, bold with passion, but a little sad and a little lost.

She had a tail. It stretched down the vent and into darkness.

Her hair caressed the ducts, licking at them in constant movement as the furnace blasted.

She hugged her knees. She wore no clothes. Her entire body was bare but at the same time covered in moving, orange light.

Her mouth was dark as charcoal as it sang.

And she was made of fire.
