it feels like goodbye (au revoir)

Rory's POV

I guess we've gotten better.

There's no more glares and snappy comments.

Well.

I can't really say that cause there is still snappy comments, but now it's more playful than anything. It's kind of nice, actually.

I think Nattie could tell there was a difference, because he kept sending me weird looks over our pizza.

"What?" Nate demanded.

I tapped my chin and he wiped some sauce off his lips. "Why're you looking at Rory all weird?"

I rolled my eyes.

"I dunno," Nattie replied.

I slumped against the seat. I didn't like silence. Silence made me think.

Nate shot me a look that clearly said 'you okay?'

I sent one that said, 'yeah. Just tired.'

"I know.'"

We both glanced away from each other before Nattie picked up on that too.

I peaked into Nate's room. I'd never been in here.

I was shocked to see a piano.

I could play, like, a little. I only really knew one song, but y'know, yolo.

I made sure Nate wasn't around creeping and slid onto the bench, resting my fingers against the smooth white keys.

I pressed down as the song came back to me.

"Today I'm not myself

And you, you're someone else

And all these wounds don't fake

And all the stars can quit..."

What a peculiar state we re in

What a peculiar state we re in..."

I coughed, before continuing.

"Let's play a game

Where all of the lives we meet can change

Let's play a game

Where nothing that we can see, the same."

"You're good."

Apparently, I hadn't done a good job in making sure Nate hadn't been creeping.

"Nah," I denied, rolling my eyes.

"Your eyes are gonna get stuck like that."

"My mom told me that."

"God, I can imagine you as a child. I bet you were, like, the epitome of sassiness."

I narrowed my eyes at him.

He laughed. "Do you know anything else?"

I shook my head. "No. I mean, I know some chords though."

He nodded at me. I bit back a retort and played them.

He grinned. "I like it."

I decided, since we were both in a good mood, to ask him something.

"So... I was was wondering if... like... maybe..."

"Yes?" Nate asked, looking amused.

"That maybe my friend Ellie could come and stay with us for a week."

He shrugged. "Sure."

Well that was shockingly easy.

I eyed him. "Are you joking?"

He looked wounded. "No!"

I nodded, still feeling slightly suspicious.

"Okay..."

"Who is this Ellie, anyways?"

"Ellie Goulding, um, she's my best friend."

"I guess we should see what your taste in friends is like."

"Evidently horrible, since I hang out with you."

"Ow! I'm hurt."

"Just like my eyes when I look at you..."

"Man, you so were a sassy child."

"And you were just perfect."

"Well, yeah."

"Oh, I forgot. You have perfect parents."

The way I said it was laced with a sort of bitterness that wasn't intentional but Nate still looked saddened.

"Look, Rory..."

"Forget it."

I turned my back on him and waited for the sound of the door closing.

I didn't realize I was crying  until I felt the warm drops against the white ivory.

Why the fuck am I crying?

Except I was used to it. I was used to crying without a real reason.

I sniffled and continued playing.

"Let's play a game

Where all of the lives we meet can change

Let's play a game

Where nothing that we can see, the same."

Right then my phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Rory?"

"That's me."

"This is Ellie."

"Oh, hey! So guess what?"

"What?"

"You can come!'

"Dude, really?"

"Yeah man."

I twisted a lock of hair around my finger, thinking maybe I'd curl my hair tomorrow.

"So, like, I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah. Talk to ya later, El!"

"Bye!"

I hung up and collapsed on my bed, feeling kind of happy Ellie could come.

Oh, but I had no idea.
