Chapter 22

Aubrey's POV

"It's not what you think." I said reaching my arm out to grab my phone before he reads the others

How could I be so stupid to have not deleted them? Or stupid enough to contact Holden, why didn't I just ask Hunter? Mentally cursing myself for the unthought out and stupid decision.

"It looks like your talking to Holden who if I remember correctly is your ex boyfriend." he spat out the last part as if it were poison in his mouth

Biting my lip I tangled my fingers nervously, weighting out my options I found myself stuck between a rock and a hard spot. If I tell him the truth he'll be pissed that I went behind his back but if I lie he might go through the texts. Besides what could I say that wouldn't sound like complete bullshit?

"Well?" he ground out stepping forward the intense storm in his hard green gems

I have to come clean, I thought sadly. My shoulders sagged knowing I had to, there's no other way.

"He's been texting me since we meet up nearly a week ago." I mumbled feeling like a child in time out forced to admit my crime

"You meet up." he growled tossing the phone aside

The sound of it shattering to pieces against the chipped wall rang through the silent apartment. Nodding I forced my head up refusing to cower like a wimp. Gulping at his stone cold expression I found my shoulders sagging further.

"I texted him." I said noticing the muscle that twitched in his jaw "I wanted to know what happened in Moon Creek, with you." I added

His nostrils flared showing the only sign of anger other than his tightly clenched jaw that looked like it was going to snap in half.

"You know about the investigation." he said rather than asked

"Yes but I only went to Holden because you refused to talk to me."

"So this is my fault." he said raising a brow

Shaking my head I stepped forward so we were at an eye to chest level "No, it's both of our faults for not talking to each other."

The way he looked down at me with those cold, dark eyes sent a chill down my spine, he's never looked at me with that expression, with anger that made me want to hide. Running his thick fingers threw his hair he took a few steps back.

"I'm sorry for going behind your back but I was so worried about you." I explained hoping he understood

He shook his head his face pinched tight with no sign of him calming down anytime soon.

"After our argument at his party." he stated sounding more like a growl

Reluctantly I shook my head knowing anymore lies right now wouldn't make this any better.

"No the day after my parent's came by." I muttered hating myself more and more for the impulsive text

"Is that why you avoided me this week?"

"No I just needed time to think."

"About whether what Holden said was true or not." he said through clenched teeth

Shaking my head I felt as if he were baiting me, wanting us to fight for whatever reason but no way am I going to take the bait, for once I want to talk our problems out.

"I know what I did was wrong but at the time I was desperate and you kept pushing me away.."

"So naturally Holden is your first pick." he snarled
