"There is a place in the heart that will never be filled; a space. We will know it more than ever. There is a place in the heart that will never be filled and we will wait and wait in that space."

I was climbing once again

I was climbing once again.

The sky above me had been painted in a variety of shades, ranging from orange to red. The sun was slowly rising behind me in the distance. It the same as every other morning I had ventured out to climb, yet it somehow seemed different today. The wind was roaring in my ears, blocking out every other sound around me while also keeping me focused on the task at hand, and especially on what I was doing right this moment. My hand already outstretched, reaching upward for the next erosion large enough to wrap my fingers around.

Every fiber in my body was burning with the strain of lifting my own weight. Every breath like fire was burning in my lungs, but it only reminded me that I was alive. I had already climbed several stories high, scaling the side of the building effortlessly because it wasn't the first time I had climbed this particular building. This building was one I had climbed countless times before, therefore my hands knew exactly where to place themselves. I just needed to trust my instincts and let them guide me.

A slight tremble persisted in my arms when I grabbed the next ledge above my head, hauling myself up so I could throw myself up the rest of the way. A small grunt escaped me when I threw my left leg up over the edge. Extremely ungracefully in fact, I managed to drag myself up all the way before getting back up onto my feet. I brushed a few specks of dirt away from my trousers before I moved towards the other side of the building where a staircase would lead me further up.

The building had been abandoned for many years, the concrete crumbling beneath my feet because this was on the outer edge of the city, uninhabited and not a part of the inner city. I halted for a second, gazing through the large windows where glass once had been, and long since destroyed. The sight was amazing enough to make me linger.

Securing myself with a deep breath, I wrapped an arm around a concrete pillar. I held on and leaned forwards with my eyes closed, took another deep breath and tried to center myself. My heart was still roaring, thumping loudly in my chest from the adrenaline coursing through me. Any faster and I feared it would break through my ribs. This thrill would never subside and each time I climbed, I always climbed higher.

My arm hooked even tighter around the crumbled concrete pillar. It was only for support, something I could hold onto as I pushed my boundaries. I leaned forth, feeling my toes go over the edge before a strong gust of wind suddenly pushed me back. A small chuckle escaped me when I involuntarily stepped back. It was almost as if it was telling me to get away from the ledge.

I couldn't help but to longingly gaze beyond the fence, wondering what would be out there beyond it. What danger laid beyond the fence? It was always an exciting subject because no one really knew. No one had dared venture that far out. And if they had, they had never returned to tell the tale. The tales and legacy of an unknown civilization that all ended with the same conclusion: The fence had been built for a reason. But was it to keep us in, or keep whatever was out there from reaching us?
