"So.... I hear the martial arts club has a new member." Taro said, much to Budo's surprise. It wasn't often that his upperclassmen started up a conversation, since he seemed to be allergic to social interactions. "A girl, right?"
"Um, yeah.... Her name's Ayano." Budo answered. Taro gave a small hum in response.
"So.... I also hear that you've been walking her home after school every day." Taro commented once again. Budo wasn't sure weather to roll his eyes in annoyance or blush, since 1.) Ayano was just a friend, and Budo liked hanging out with her and 2.) he knew exactly where this conversation was going.
"What exactly are you trying to get at? Don't tell me your jealous?" Budo answered back playfully. Taro deflected Budo's wonderful humor as usual.
"I'm just saying, normally you seem dedicated to staying in the club room to finish late homework, and now suddenly you're ditching that not once or twice, but every day? Be careful, someone might start up some pretty steamy rumors." What Budo wanted to reply with was 'do you mean someone like you?', but he instead decided on a more polite way of expressing his annoyance.
"For about the hundredth time today, she and I are just friends. Nothing more, nothing less." Budo crossed his arms, which is the universal signal for "shut the hell up". Taro nodded.
"So she's single?" Taro teased. Budo couldn't help but be impressed, since humor was something the older boy just simply didn't do all that often.
"Yeah, but sorry, she's not into fuckboys." Budo retorted back. Taro smiled slightly, then pointed towards the cherry tree in the corner of the courtyard.
"I think your 'friend' is waiting for you." Budo turned his head, and saw Ayano sitting against the tree with a small box in her hand. He waved goodbye to Taro and walked over, sitting next to her.
"Hey!" He greeted. She looked up and gave him her usual nod and a quick smile, and then looked back down at her little box. "What's in there?"
"Lunch." Ayano answered. "I think I might have made too much..."
Budo raised an eyebrow and looked back down at the box. Clearly her definition of too much was very different from his.
"Well... Leftovers are always good!" Budo said enthusiastically. Ayano chuckled a bit and put the small box in Budo's lap.
"Take it, I don't need it." She said. Budo opened it up and tried to suppress a laugh.
"I think you might have burned the rice a bit..." He snickered. Ayano turned bright red with embarrassment, causing Budo to lose it completely. Ayano elbowed him in the ribs, but couldn't help but smile a bit.
"Next time, leave the cooking to your mom." Ayano tensed up, her smile fading and her attention going back to the ground.
"I think I should go get ready for class." And with that, she left, leaving a confused Budo behind her.
