Rule #11: Do It Like You Do It To Me

I burst out laughing, attracting more than a few looks from people passing by our table. “Yeah, right.”

Cody didn’t bat an eye. “I’m serious.”

Shaking my head at the preposterous idea, I chuckled again “Man, Cody. I still don’t like you but you can be real funny,”

He sighed, giving me a patronizing stare, “Don’t believe it if you don’t want to, but it’s true. Practically everyone knows it – except you, of course. But you know what? I think you love her right back.”

He was so confident, chin jutting out in defiance. It set me off all over again and I curled up, laughing so hard milk almost came out of my nose. “Enough, enough; I can’t take it!”

“Cody, what did you do to Adam?” Audrey asked, coming to stand by my and looking at her ex-boyfriend disapprovingly. Cody met my eyes, leading silently for me not to say anything. Not that I would. The idea was just so out of this world I wasn’t able to function properly even thinking about it, forget saying it out loud.

“Nothing,” he finally said, moving back and getting out of his seat. “Alright, I’ve got to go, now. Plus, Nicole will have my head if she knew that I was, uh, here.” His eyes uncertainly looked at Audrey just as I did, and I was proud to see her not even flinch.

“Are you guys leaving, too?” May snuck up behind us.

Audrey glanced over at me before nodding. “Yeah, I think so. I’ve got some university reading to do,” she said apologetically.

“Oh, that’s cool. Listen, guys, it’s Jay’s birthday tomorrow. I wanted to throw him something here. What do you guys think?”

I smiled. “I think it’s an awesome idea. Email me the details of what you want later, okay?”

“I will. Now I’ve got to get back to work. See you guys soon!”

Audrey gave her a quick hug goodbye before raising an eyebrow at me, dangling my set of keys. “So… am I driving Lana home as –”

I hurriedly grabbed the keys before she could finish.

And of course I ignored that little tingle that went up my spine as I brushed her fingers.

“Gosh, Adam!” Audrey complained, wiping her face. “When I said crack an egg, I didn’t mean crush it to pieces!”

It was Jay’s birthday today. And as per May’s request, Audrey was brushing up her rusty baking skills and was making the cake for the small birthday bash at Starbucks tonight.

And I was apparently helping her.

“Okay, okay.” I backed off, narrowly missing the bag of flour on the counter. Damn, this kitchen was too small for two people to function together. “So, we’ve got your ‘liquid’ ingredients, now what?”

She was looking at me with distrust and frowning. “I suppose you could put in the flour while I go make a quick trip to the bathroom.”

Saluting her, I searched the cupboard for a cup. Finding Audrey’s coffee mug, I scooped out a cup of flour into the bowl Audrey had left for me. Turning back to get another scoop, my elbow accidentally knocked the bag over the floor, spilling whiteness all over the kitchen floor.

Holy crud. She was going to kill me.

“Now sift a tablespoon of baking powder in it!” I heard her voice call from the bathroom.
