Neith's Pov

I wiped beads of sweat that ran down my forehead.

Uff... that was a good workout I thought as I took in deep breaths. I smelled of dead foul mixed with donkey poop. I needed a bath as soon as possible.

It was already getting dark so I packed my stuff a little faster while whistling a random tune.

Father was not there when I woke up this morning. I guess something came up so he had to leave early. I sighed, he could have at least informed me before he left. It's not like I would have stopped him from going or anything, or maybe if it was too early I would have. Maybe I'm a spoilt child like Ammon says.

Ammon also said he would be back home later than usual, which means I will be home alone till late at night again. No surprise there. I didn't like being left alone even though I was used to it.

Maybe I should visit Anka's place?

Anka was my best friend and the only one I seemed to get along with. To me, she was family. I smiled warmly at the memories that flashed by.

Her personality was the exact opposite of mine. She is usually shy, doesn't talk much at first but once she knows you well enough she will not shut up. She hates the sight of a fight or blood and would rather be rescued by someone than punch a person. She is pretty much like all the other girls around her age except she is much more sweeter and awesome than any of them.

At first we didn't get along at all cause she was about three years older and enjoyed bossing me around. But over time we kind of just became close and till this day we wonder how.

I decided to go meet her. But first I needed to go home and freshen up. I didn't need an hour lecture from her on how to act like a proper lady.

*************

I opened the door of my house. It was pretty late as I had spent quite some time at Anka's place. The crescent moon was already high up in the night sky. The night seemed to be getting colder. Its probably because winter was approaching.

I lit the fire and tried warming myself. I wondered when father and Ammon would be back. I ate some pheasant meat along with some figs, honey and goats milk. I didn't know why I was feeling so cold. It's like the fire couldn't warm me at all. I decided to take a small nap by the fire place till father and brother returned. So I laid a few skins on the floor and curled up into a big ball.

I held the moonstone around my neck. Somehow I always felt better whenever I did. Before I could think of anything else I seemed to be drifting into a pleasant state of tranquility.

************

“Neith, wake up,” came a soft voice. A pair of cold hands seemed to be shaking me slightly.

“Mmm... get away! I want to sleep for a bit longer,” I said, grumpily rolling over to my other side but felt pain pulse through my body. I groaned, I probably over did my training again.

“Neith get up, it's important,” came the same voice but a bit more firm then before. Wait a minute! I know this voice.

With one eye open I looked in the direction I heard the voice from. Ammon was kneeling down looking at me. I turned to face him, rubbing my eyes to force them to open up fully. I hated getting up so early in the mornings. My body always ached so much.

“The foods on the table,” I said yawning. I looked up at Ammon when he didn't say anything. He seemed like he was about to cry any second. All sleep vanished instantly.

“What's wrong? You look pale,”  I asked, moving closer so I could feel his forhead. Maybe he had a fever. He grabbed my hand before I could touch him.

“Hey what's wrong with you?” I asked concerned. He looked at me, with such sad eyes,my heart skipped a beat in fright.

“It's about dad,” he said, holing my hands in his.

“What about dad?” I asked looking at him with a frown.

“He... um... he *clears throat* isn't gonna come back home,” Ammon said, diverting his eyes.

Huh... What did he mean by that?

“Is dad going away for work again?” I asked confused.

“No, I mean dad isn't gonna come back... ever,” Ammon said, looking everywhere but at me.

“What?” I gasped, moving back a little.

Did he just say dad isn't gonna come back ever? Like forever ever? Like he died? Did I hear it wrong? Ya, I probably did right?

I looked at Ammon hoping he was joking but when I looked into his eyes, I knew it was the truth.

It couldn't be. How could my father be dead? No way... it wasn't possible. Baba couldn't be... it was a lie! This was just a bad dream.

“Neith? Neith!” that was the last thing I heard before I slipped into a still state of darkness. This had to be a bad dream. It just had too.
