"Shadow is when you walk inside after the heat of a summer day; it's the coolness that greets you at the door. Shadow is making everything a shade darker...it's a cloud going over the sun and relieving the world from the constant yellow heat of the sun, because sometimes it gets to be a bit too much.
"It's also like secrets, a dark side to things. It's not all bad, but it's also not all the bright normal colors of life at their full brightness."
"Is shadow sadness?"
"It can be. Sadness can feel like a shadow on life." He thought about that, and then eventually nodded, folding his hands over his chest.
"So," he said. "Trees."
