Maxwell planned to build a mountain get away for his wife and many children to escape Atlanta's oppressive summer heat.

By the time The Devereaux Mansion was finished in the fall of 1930, it had grown into a monster. It was a huge, secluded, grey stone monster that sat high up on the top of a mountain and overlooked miles and miles of thick pine and hardwood forests.

Once the mansion was completed, Charlotte did not care for it.

Perhaps it reminded her of the children she had lost or perhaps she simply preferred her garden parties, charity events, and comfortable life in the city.

Millicent's infamous Halloween Party of 1930 had gotten way out of hand. So out of hand that it was forever branded "the event" by her parents. It is said that her mother, Charlotte would turn red and storm out of the room at the mere mention of it.

Once the mansion in North Georgia was completed, Charlotte suggested to Maxwell that they let Millicent use it for her parties. The place was big enough for all of Millicent's friends to stay over, there were no neighbors to complain about the noise, there would be no newspaper reporters lurking in the bushes, and there would be a staff to look after young Millicent and her guests.
