By that spring, most of the abled bodied men had left Dark Valley to enlist in the war effort. They were all very eager to kick Nazi and (pardon the expression) "Nip" butt and had hit the road for Columbus Georgia to begin basic training at Fort Benning. A few trained as combat pilots for the Navy at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Many women left the valley too. Most of them found work at Marietta's Bell Aircraft plant, commonly known as Bell Bomber.
