“Um Sharpie, what are you doing at my house?” Danger asked me which snapped me out of my gaping stare.
I opened my mouth to respond when I voice came from behind Danger.
“Who is at the door?” A soft female voice asked.
Then a woman who appeared to be in her late 30’s. She wore an apron that has flour dashed across it. She looked like a typical stay at home mom that would always bake things.
“Well hello there.” The lady said to my mother and I.
My mother stood beside me and stuck out her hand. “Hi, my name is Lisa Plouse and this is my daughter Sharpie. We live next door and we thought that we would bring you guys some cookies and welcome you to the neighborhood.”
Danger and I stood there awkwardly as our parents started to talk.
“Oh! By the way my name is Jennifer Pendland and this is my son Garrett. He actually might be close to your age Sharpie. How old are you?” Lisa asked me.
I shifted my feet awkwardly and responded, “Seventeen.” I said quietly. Her eyes lit up and then she clapped her hands which startled me.
“Oh goody! I bet you and Garrett will get to be good friends! Jennifer why don't you come in and we can talk. We can let the kids get to know each other.” Jennifer said happily. Then her and my mother disappeared into Danger’s house.
I stood there not moving, staring at the potted plants beside me. I heard Danger clear his throat and that is when I looked back up at him.
“You can come in if you want.” He told me before he walked into his house. I followed behind him seeing that I didn't really want to be left alone on his doorstep.
We walked into what seemed to be his living room or soon to be living room since there were unopened boxes marked ‘living room’.
Danger gestured me to take a seat beside him on the couch so I did so. We again we surrounded by awkward silence. That is until Danger broke it.
“It’s crazy that we live next to each other don't you think?” He said. He was clearly trying to break the awkward silence. Too bad it didn't work. All I wanted to know is why all of a sudden he ditched me.
I shrugged my shoulders and didn't say a word. I didn't need friends anyways seeing that I have lasted this long without one.
“Look, i'm sorry-” Danger started, but I cut him off.
“You’re sorry you ditched me and blah blah blah. It’s ok I get it no need to worry about me.” I said hiding my emotions.
He sighed, “I want to be friends with you Sharpie, but my other friends said that if I am see talking to you that they won't be friends with me. That wouldn't really matter if Bennett wasn't captain of the basketball team. He told me that if I was seen with you, my position on the basketball team will be kissed goodbye and you know that I am depending on a basketball scholarship to get into college.”
I can not believe this. Bennett told him to stay away from me. Not only that but his basketball position will be taken away if he is seen with me. What bull crap!
I did know how much Danger needed a basketball scholarship though. He told me one day how his mom was struggling with money right now seeing that they just moved halfway across the United States alone.
“Do you still want to be friends? I mean you were my first friend here.” Danger asked me which quite frankly caught me off guard.
I thought about it. I mean it was nice having a friend and not being alone. I did enjoy having someone to talk to, especially someone like Danger. He is different from everyone else.
“Yeah I do, but it doesn't matter anymore Danger. Your basketball position is way more important than a friendship.” I told him in all seriousness.
It was quite then again and I looked over at Danger and saw that he seemed to be pondering over something.
I took the moment to get a good look at Danger. He had blonde hair that was sorta long, his eyes were muddy brown, not a blemish was seen on his face, and he not too muscular but he still had noticeable muscle.
“I have an idea!” He suddenly exclaimed. I hastily snapped my eyes from his body to his eyes and I felt my face heat up.
“We are going to be secret best friends.” He told me as if it was an everyday normal thing. It wasn't though.
With a weird looked I asked, “What? Oh and we upgraded to best friends? I don't think I approved of that.”
He laughed, but I didn't. I was still on the fence about the whole us being just friends idea, not even best friends.
“Yeah secret best friends. We can be best friends and do things best friends do, but no one has to know about it. Its a good plan isn't it.” Danger explained.
I was unsure about that plan. I don't know if its such a good idea I mean it sounds like I would end up getting hurt in the end.
“I don't know about that…” I trailed off uncertain.
Danger sat there staring at me for who knows how long. I broke of the stare and spoke up again,” I will agree to this on one condition.” I paused to look at him and he nodded telling me to continue with what I was saying. “By the end of this school year you have to either choose to announce our secret friendship or end our friendship. Deal?”
I honestly can't believe I even said that. As selfish as it sounds, I hope he picks me and not the populars.
A girl can hope right?
“Deal.” Danger said without hesitation.
I smiled a small smile at him which he returned. We exchanged numbers just in time for our mothers to come into the living room.
“Thank you so much for the cookies, Lisa. I hope that Garrett and you had a chance to talk and get a chance to known each other, Sharpie.”
I told her we did even though Garrett, well Danger, already knew each other. My mother and I said our goodbyes and left their house.
