Childhood
The best thing about childhood is innocence. We can do whatever we want whenever we want without ever thinking about our actions very deeply. We didn’t have that sense of responsibility. We did things spontaneously and we took situations lightly. As children, we saw life beautifully, full of color, and ready to sweep us off our feet only with the sweetest of words.
That’s why we have children stories. Those fairytales written years ago and recreated as movies we grew up watching. They instilled positive ideas in our minds and hearts such as the importance of family, the strength of friendship and the magic of true love.
But now that we’ve grown up, we realize that finding true love isn’t as easy as singing with a complete stranger. Or family isn’t always as perfect as those in fairy tales. We finally see that your first kiss isn’t always true love’s kiss; and beasts are not always a cursed prince. Most times, they’re just that. A beast.
So now, I want you to recreate these stories and make them your own. Make your own set of characters and plot twists. I want to see the core of the original stories, as well as the songs, in your work. Be creative as you put symbols and weave the scenes together to create a revamped version of the chosen story for you. Release the child in you during this first round. Be imaginative and creative.
Why I chose this theme? I want to see how these set of stories look from a different perspective. I want to see how others understand them. There are different versions of some of these stories below. I want you to find the version that suits your idea. Research, read, and imagine. Constantly ask yourself, “what if?”.
It doesn’t have to be a children story. You’re free to choose the genre that you want or you’re comfortable with. That is if you want to stay on the safe side. If you’re a little risky, though, you can also start by challenging yourself to use a genre you haven’t been using. I’ve asked your dilemmas and your goals for this contest and I hope, together, we can help each other out.
Good luck, Team Kendii!
PAIR ONE
BraveThis song was stuck in my head for days and luckily, I needed it. Sit Still, Look Pretty by Daya talks about how a girl wants to work and not just sit doing nothing at all. I thought it was perfect for Merida in Disney’s Brave as she didn’t want to marry a prince. I know there are other things to consider in Brave such as her love for her mother but I want you to focus in Merida’s independence. You can still throw in her love for her mother so as not to stray far from the original story. It depends on you if you want her to have her prince or not. Boys do not hinder independence, anyway. You just have to be sure to clear that in your story and make us see that message. I believe this pair can give justice to a strong character like Merida and that is why I chose them. You gave us strong audition pieces and I want you to keep that up.
