I jumped on my bike and rode home as fast as I could.  My dad was going to kill me if I was late!  His temper roared when I didn't follow his exact directions.  I parked my motorcycle outside the building and raced upstairs to out apartment.  I quietly slipped in and checked my watch again.  It was 8:54.  I cursed at myself for being so stupid and tiptoed upstairs.  Unfortunately, that was my mistake.  My dad stood at my bed, and by the look on his face he was furious.

"I said be back by 8:00."  He growled.  I stepped back.  "I take care of you.  I cook for you, I clean after you, and you cannot even come back when I have said?"  His voice raised slightly. "Te ragazzo inutile! You should be grateful! You could have stayed on the streets where I found you!" I winced.  My "dad" often pulled that card.

"I was only an hour late.." I defended myself.

"Idiota! Solo un'ora. Only an hour."  He fumed.

"Dad! It's not that late, I didn't do anything!" I protested.  "Si reagire in modo eccessivo troppo." I muttered the last bit under my breath, but he still heard me and stepped forward, his eyes fiery.

"You thinking because you are stupido adolescente  you can say what you want!"  He growled and raised his hand.

Slap!

My cheek burned.  Anger roared inside me, but I tried to keep it in check.  I didn't even do anything wrong, but the scars and bruises I had acquired over the years was my dad's way of telling me otherwise.

"Hey! You have no right to do that. I only came home late, it's not as if I went out and got drunk or something!" I yelled back at him. He responded with his fist in my ribs.  Not for the first time, I felt a slight crack inside me and ignored the searing pain it brought.

"Do not. Talk back to me.  You are lucky I even noticed you on the street that night! I should've left you there."  He stalked down the stairs, leaving me crying in frustration in my room.  I should've run away, but I knew he would find me.  I spent the rest of the night in front of a dark canvas, a small flashlight bringing me my only light, flinging colors onto the board in a raging effort to calm myself down.  He was right.  I did, after all, deserve what I got.
