We stumbled out of the airport, breathless and in love with our new surroundings- half because it was beautiful, and half because we were safe here. He laughed- a beautiful harmonious laugh that made me smile, and I swooped down and picked him up by his waist and spun him around. He let out a yelp, then laughed some more, and then I hugged him, and he squeezed me back.
"Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes." I whispered.
"We did it! We're safe, we're ok, we can live normally again!" He laughed at his own statement, as if this was a completely new idea for him. I laughed too, as if not even the English clouds could darken our moods. He stuck his arm through mine, taking me by surprise.
"Come on, let's find a cab. Let's find a home, and a job."

We thanked the taxi driver and Nico rubbed the sleep from his eyes.  His eyelashes, long and thick, struggled to lift themselves up.  I lifted his chin.
"Morning, Sunshine," I teased.  "Zitto, ho bisogno di dormire." He grumbled in Italian and shot me a glare. I let the sleepy boy lean on me as we entered a town.  Soon both of us were relatively tired, and he began to drift off again, so I swooped him off his feet and he nuzzled his face into my chest.  I carried Nico bridal style up the stairs of a colorful house.  It was the only one that wasn't grey on the street, so I assumed the person in there wasn't too horrible.  I knocked on the door with my foot, adjusting Nico in my arms.  He muttered something, then laughed quietly.  I stifled a laugh at this adorable boy.  The door swung open and a nice looking old lady smiled questioningly. I thanked God it wasn't some crazy murderer dude.
"Uh, hi, miss? I'm Will, and this," I gestured to Nico with my head. "Is Nico.  We just came from America, and need a place to stay tonight.. We were wondering if you knew anywhere?" I asked as politely as I could. She smiled kindly and opened the door wider.
"Come in, dear. You poor things, you can stay with me tonight."  Nico stirred and woke up for a second, and I hushed him softly, rocking him and humming into his ear.  I looked up at the lady and thanked her immensely.
"You are an angel sent from heaven, thank you so much." I said to her, and she smiled at me.
"This way, son.  Come on, you two need sleep." She looked pointedly at the boy I was holding and laughed quietly.  We climbed the stairs and turned to a bedroom.
"This is the spare room. I hope it's enough, though I assume you two can share a bed?" Her eyes twinkled and I laughed softly.
"Thank you so much, this will do great."
"If you need anything, call me. My name's Charlotte, but you can call me Charlie. Everyone does." She patted my shoulder and left, then returned with a handful of clothes.  "My son left for college a handful of years ago, and he left a few things behind."  She smiled sadly and closed the door.   I lay Nico on the bed and took his jacket and shoes off.  Then I unbuttoned his shirt and slipped it off, replacing it with a comfortable t shirt. I changed his pants and then tucked him into the bed.  I did the same to myself and lay tomorrows clothes out for both of us before joining him.  He turned towards me and sprawled his arm over me. I pursed my lips and smiled before closing my eyes.
