When I get off the school bus, it's just a small walk to my house. Since it's winter, it's already starting to get quite dark outside, even though it's not that late yet. I hug my coat closer to my body so I can keep the little warmth that I still have, on me. The streets are empty, so I do what I always do when I'm alone: I start singing to myself.
'moksoriman deureodo nunmuri nal geot gata
ajigeun naega da beotyeonael himi eobseo
michyeobeoril geot gata byeonhaeganeun neol'I lose myself in the words of and close my eyes whilst I continue, knowing that I know the way to my house literally with my eyes closed.
Suddenly I hear a voice from behind me.
'geonneneun geotdo geobina
ajigeun geu mal haji marajwo'For just a couple of words we sing together, until the moment I realise I'm not the only one singing the words and turn around immediately. In front of me is a boy with a huge winter coat, wearing his hood up in a way that it's almost covering his whole face.
'You know Sweden Laundry by Voice?' Is the first thing that comes out of my mouth. I can feel my cheeks turn red, embarrassed that I sung in front of others, but at the same time I'm amazed by the fact that someone actually knows that song
'Yeah, not enough people know how good that song is,' he replies, I can hear him smile by his voice, sadly enough I can only see his eyes since the rest is covered up by his huge hood. But his eyes are enough to put me at ease. His voice, however, sounds the complete opposite of what his eyes say. The deepness that comes from his voice contrasts the light sparkle in his eyes in a way that makes me even more nervous than I already was before. I don't like talking to strangers, that's usually the reason for my nervousness.
I shyly nod, not knowing what to say in such a situation. An awkward silence passes. In my head I'm quickly trying to think of something to say, because I'd love to talk more to this guy, even though the 'no-talking-to-strangers' thing is still in the back of my head. But nothing comes to mind when I most need it. Luckily the boy opens his mouth.
'So, in which direction are you heading?'
As a response I point towards a huge flat on the other side of the road, around 200 meters from where we were standing.
'Too bad, I have to go left here, but it was nice talking and singing with you!' I can hear him smile and his eyes glinster when he waves. Then he heads in the other direction, which leads to me being left behind, standing here in the middle of the pavement.
Why do I always make such a fool of myself? Can I never just talk to someone? We had the same interests, or at least one, he seemed around my age and nice. We could've had a chat and not be that awkward. But no, of course I have to make it this stupid situation in which I just stand there like a potato. I would have loved it to get to know him more. Stupid social awkwardness.
