"Sadie!" she heard at the end of day when she was walking across the parking lot. It was Maddie, Grace, and Marina, waving her over. She walked over, slightly hesitant after what Millie had said, but she really didn't know who to trust at this point. "we're heading over to the coffee shop, care to join us?"

"I..."

"Actually, Sadie made plans with us" interrupted Millie from behind, putting her arm around Sadie's shoulders. "Isn't that right, Sadie?"

Seriously, I've been here a day and already I'm stuck in the middle of this shit...how'd this happen!? She had no idea what to do, so she chose the safest option, "actually, my mom wanted me home straight after school today...sorry." She observed the 3 girls looking a bit pissed that she'd declined their invite, but they tried to hide it.

"That's ok, maybe tomorrow?" Grace said, a bit too sweetly.

"Yeah, maybe..." Sadie answered.

In contrast Millie just laughed a little. "No problem, see you tomorrow." Sadie noted that she actually sounded sincere. This is fucking confusing...

They all went their separate ways. Sadie walked for a couple of minutes by herself before she heard footsteps running up behind her. She looked around, worried what was going to happen, but it was just Millie who'd obviously run from wherever her gang had disappeared to in order to catch her.

"H...hey...Sadie" she said, breathing hard. Wow, she must really have sprinted. She held up her finger, indicating for Sadie to wait for a minute while she got her breath back. "Sorry, just wanted to apologise for putting you in an awkward situation back there. They're total bitches and I just like to mess with them" she explained.

Sadie frowned slightly, "you ran all this way to apologise for that?"

"Well, yeah...look, I get it, you're new, you don't want to get involved in shit like this on day 1, I just...wanted to say sorry...ok?" Sadie couldn't help but see that Millie looked a bit self-conscious, like her mask was slipping slightly.

"Er, ok, thanks I guess"

"Hey, does your mum really want you home straight away? Offer still stands if you wanna join us" she said.

"And what, exactly, are you planning to do?" asked Sadie.

"We're going to go study at the library" answered Millie, smirking.

"Riiight, study at the library, I don't think so" said Sadie, not believing a word of it.

Millie put on a fake hurt expression, "you hurt my feelings, Sadie" she said, putting one hand over her heart and drawing a fake tear from her eye with her finger on the other. Sadie couldn't help but smile and shake her head, causing Millie to grin back at her, "next time, Sadie, next time." With that she walked back down the road, Sadie watched her go for a minute and was just about to turn and head home when she saw Millie glance back at her. Realising Sadie was still looking she gave a small wave and carried on going.

"Mom, I'm home" Sadie called out as she got through the door.

"Hey honey, how was it? Did you make any friends?"

"It was ok, school is school, lessons, surprise tests" she said, rolling her eyes, "and yeah, I think I met some ok people...I'm just not sure which ones yet" she added quietly.
