we're all in the same boat

I GASP as I awake, lifting my hanging head up. I crane my neck to see the soldier that looks down at me. His eyes are cold and emotionless, not taking them off me as he scribbles something in pen down in a notebook.

"Good morning, soldat," he states.

My heavy eyes slowly scan the compound. It seems.......different. I don't remember it having such an aura coming from it, like there are more soldiers here than before. And I also realize that there is no longer hair in my face; it has all been combed and plaited into a long braid going halfway down my back.

The soldier glances towards the commander in the corner, whispering, "She no longer recollects what she did before after we wiped her memory clean."

Recollect what?

I suppose he is right.

"Soldat, you are to be introduced to the newly improved elite death squad today," the commander says, stepping towards me. "You and your partner are going to each duel them alone."

I nod slowly, preparing myself to meet them. Who are these new soldiers? I want to know how I compare to them.

The soldier that greeted me once I had awoken releases me from the chair and pulls me up out of it. He doesn't drag me anywhere; he simply escorts me and steadies me if my legs start to feel like jelly underneath me from not walking for so long. He leads me into a room that I have only been in for training before.

It is a large rectangular room that reeks of sweat and blood. In fact, there are even bloodstains on the floor from previous battles. My eyes travel to the bench of new faces, all of whom shiver once they see me. There are five of them, four men and one female. They all inhabit some sort of emotion or feeling in their eyes except for one. He seems to be the most dangerous.

I am directed to a spot on the bench next to my partner, who sits quietly and staring off into space. He glances up at me for a moment, greeting me silently.

"Soldats," the commander shouts, gaining our attention. "Welcome to the first duel set between you all."

He points at two soldiers from across the room, his finger pointing down towards the other female soldier and me. "Ladies first," he sneers.

I nonchalantly stand from my chair, stepping towards the center of the room at the opposite side from the woman. Scientists in white lab coats and guards that are more heavily armed than usual watch us make eye contact from our separate sides of the room. Her blonde hair is pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and her eyes are worried.

I feel a hand on my right shoulder, one belonging to the commander. His thumb jabs into the metal plate in it, causing the metal to retract from my arms. I stare in awe at my skin, wondering how long it's been since I've seen it.

"Let us see how you have improved," he mumbles. He steps back into the corner, shouting at us to, "Begin!"

I just stand there with an eyebrow raised. The woman begins to barrel towards me, her teeth bared like a beast showing its sharp fangs to its prey. With just the flick of my hand, she halts as my fingertips produce a thick black fog that clouds her face. She coughs as it whispers to her, causing her to press her hands over her ears to try and make it stop.
