The rest of the week passed by with a blur of new classes and homework. I had started trying to avoid Gabe, but he seemed like he was everywhere. It wasn't that I didn't want to see him, but the fact that I really wanted to see him that drove me away. I didn't trust myself around him, and I couldn't afford any more mistakes. He wanted to walk me to classes, so I tried to walk in large groups of people and blend in. That didn't work because he would just growl at everyone and they would scatter like dandelions on the wind. He would wait outside my dorm room after I was done with class, so I started going to the library until I had finished all of my homework for the day. Then I would practically run from the library to my room, keeping my head down and my feet moving at all costs. Every night I would run into the room, sweaty and out-of-breath and slam the door behind me.
Paige would just offer me a sympathetic smile. She knew what I was running from even if she didn't know why, and the fact that she didn't ask any questions made me incredibly grateful. I spent my nights trying to ignore the aching hole in my chest that I suspected was due to the lack of contact with a certain someone. Paige and I watched movies over a bowl of popcorn and engaged in better conversation than I had gotten in years. I learned that she and John had been mated after they met at college orientation. Paige was a werewolf as well, but from another pack originally. Their scents attracted each other and they had spent the entire time allotted for the tour hooking up in a closet, she informed me through a lot of giggles. We discussed everything from books and movies to the best foods we had ever eaten. Paige talked a lot about her personal life, but never asked me about mine to my immense relief.
It was Friday night, and Paige was getting ready for a party at the pack-house. There was one every Friday, because apparently werewolves had an affinity for drinking. It took them longer to get drunk, so for some reason that made them all the more enthusiastic to do it. I myself didn't have a problem with drinking on occasion and normally I would have joined in, but I tended to get pretty reckless when I consumed alcohol, and with Gabe in attendance there was no telling what I might do. I was currently dressed in baggy sweatpants and a red extra large hoodie that made me look like I was drowning in fabric. I was simply watching her get ready, trying to ignore the thoughts of Gabe at the party with other drunk girls. I shouldn't get jealous, there was no reason to. But I still had to fight the urge to go with just to make sure he was going to be okay. I was practically sitting on my hands to keep myself in my bed rather than marching over to the party myself.
Paige left a few minutes later and I was alone with my thoughts, making them so much worse. I tried to sleep, but I was miserable. I wanted to see him, but I couldn't let myself. I spent 2 hours laying in bed, trying to distract myself into sleep. I used all of my old tricks, from simply counting sheep to hanging my head off of the edge of the bed, which had worked for a few months until the nightmares got too bad. But every time I closed my eyes I saw Gabe's emerald eyes staring at me, just like they had that day I was eating lunch. It was infuriating. I was on the verge of tears when I heard a sudden knock at the door. I jumped and my fists clenched involuntarily. I took a deep breath and padded over to the door, swinging it open, bringing me face to face with a flushed and smirking Gabe.
"Hey Evan!" he slurred, and I rolled my eyes, trying to fight off the butterflies in my stomach at his close proximity.
"What are you doing here? Also how did you even get here?" I frowned. I didn't mind drinking, but drunk driving was a whole other kind of stupid.
"I walked." He pushed past me and into the room, landing with an ungraceful thud on the rug. I closed the door and ran over to him, attempting to lift his considerable weight from the floor. He had just gotten on his feet when his arms went around my waist and pulled me closely into him. I was basically standing on his toes, but he didn't seem to mind, and neither did I. The hole in my chest was gone and in it's place was a roaring sensation that seemed like it originated from his hands on my waist. I couldn't remember how to breathe, and all I could do was stare into his eyes. He was moving down toward my face and my rational brain was scared into life. I pushed him away, breathing heavily. We were on other sides of the room. Gabe was breathing just as heavily as I was, but rather than being overwhelmed, he seemed angry.
"Why won't you let me in?" he was talking too calmly, too evenly. But his glowing eyes gave away his anger. "I have done nothing to betray your trust, and you are avoiding me like I'm carrying some sort of disease. We are mates, and we belong together. My pack is questioning why I haven't marked you yet. You are endangering my place as Alpha, and you won't tell me why. So tell me what's so scary about me? About us?!"
I was getting incredibly frustrated, and I blurted out, "Because I don't trust my feelings for you! I don't trust myself around you!"
That was all Gabe needed to hear, and taking three giant strides across the tiny room, roughly grabbed my face, and planted his lips against mine. My mind shut off and body reacted instantly, my arms snaking their way around his neck and pulling myself up closer to him. Gabe's arms slid down my body and lifted me up by my thighs carrying me over to the bed. He sat and my legs wrapped around his waist. He lips moved down my jawline, making me throw my head back and bite my lip. I was lost in a sea of sensation, and I couldn't focus on anything. I involuntarily rolled my hips and Gabe groaned, tightening his grip on my thighs. Gabe's lips had moved down to where my neck and my shoulder met. I was jolted out of the pleasure that I was feeling when I felt teeth against my neck. I didn't even have time to react before there was a sharp pain in my neck and I faded into blackness.
