"Please," you begged.

"No. Stop," Shawn said without even looking up.

"But I deserve to know! I should get to hear it before all those other girls do. I mean, I'm better," you insisted.

"Stop," he repeated, shaking his head with a grin.

Shawn was sitting cross-legged on his bed, notebook in hand, scribbling lyrics. You were dying to know what he was working on. Normally, he told you everything — ran new lines by you, asked for your opinion. You even had a few lyric ideas that made it into his older songs. But this time, he wasn't budging.

"Shawn... Shawn... SHAWN!"

He sighed. "I'm not letting you read it."

"Then read it out loud!"

"It probably sucks," he said quickly.

Liar. Total liar. He was just trying to make you stop begging. Like you didn't know him better than that.

"None of your songs suck," you said flatly.

Shawn looked up, caught your stare, then flipped a page in his notebook. He started writing faster, his hair falling over his forehead.

"You really want me to read my new song to you?" he asked finally.

"Yes, I do."

He smirked down at his notebook, then pulled it up close to his face. His nose scrunched, lips pursed, forehead creased — and, honestly, it was adorable.

"Reading," you reminded him. "Not singing."

"Okay, okay," he said, pretending to clear his throat. Then, with fake seriousness, he began:

"This girl thought she knew him so well,
but things weren't quite what they seemed.
She thought one thing, he thought the other,
turns out life's not a perfect dream.
Ready for the chorus...
Because she thought he would show her his songs—"

"Fuck you," you interrupted, crossing your arms.

"But the truth was," he continued dramatically,
"he just said this stupid little ton."

"'Ton'?!" you laughed.

"I needed something to rhyme with 'song,' okay? I was pressed for time!"

"'Pawn' would've worked," you said, still laughing.

He gasped. "How could I use pawn?"

"Because—" you sang playfully,

"She thought he would show her his songs,
but the truth was she was just another pawn!"

Shawn pointed at you, grinning. "This is why I keep you around."

You smiled back. This was your favorite thing about the two of you — how you could turn the dumbest things into moments worth remembering.

Still, one thing hadn't changed.

"Good to know," you said, leaning over. "Now, can I see your actual song?"

"...No."
