"Hey, is there anything I can grab for any of you?" you asked, polite and practiced.
"Are you single?" one of the boys blurted out.
"Geoff!" the curly-haired one whispered sharply, eyes wide. He was definitely embarrassed.
You just smiled, like this wasn't the first time someone had asked you something like that while you were at work. Because it wasn't.
You finished up at a few regulars' tables while they talked amongst themselves. Lilly had taken over the boys' table, but you could feel eyes on you now and then — specifically the curly-haired one.
Your last table of the night was seated right beside them.
"So, are you?" Geoff said again.
"Geoff," his friend hissed.
"Am I what?" you asked, pretending not to know.
"Single," Geoff repeated, unapologetically.
"Oh. Yeah, I am," you said, eyes flicking away.
Geoff cheered like it was his victory, but the curly-haired one still looked horrified. It felt like he was asking for someone else. Maybe even... for him.
Eventually, the boys left — well, all but one. They'd given Lilly a generous tip — she was glowing — but the curly-haired boy stayed behind in the booth, sitting quietly.
"Y/N?" he said when you walked by.
You paused. "How did you know my name?"
He pointed gently to your nametag. "Name tag."
"Oh." You laughed softly. "I forget I'm even wearing that. You're actually the first person to use it... in like, three years."
He smiled — warm, apologetic, real. "I just wanted to say sorry. For Geoff. That was... not cool."
"It's fine," you said. "It happens more often than you'd think. Not just to me — the other girls too."
"Yeah, I know," he said quietly. "But I never want to be part of the group that does that. You're working. You shouldn't have to deal with it. So... I'm sorry. Really."
You blinked — because no one had ever apologized before. Ever.
"Thank you," you said, and your voice came out softer than you meant. "That's... actually really nice of you."
He nodded. "I'm Shawn, by the way."
"Y/N," you said — and then remembered. "But... you already knew that."
You both laughed — just a little — the kind that feels like something beginning.
He stood to leave. "You have a good night."
"You too, Shawn."
And just like that — he was gone.
