"That was great, Shawn. How are you feeling?" Andrew asked.

"It was incredible. I still can't believe it." I exhaled, running a hand through my hair. "Andrew, I just rehearsed for Madison Square Garden. It doesn't feel real."

"I'm extremely happy for you, kid. You don't even know," he said, smiling.

"You got me here. Thank you."

"No — you got yourself here. Your talent got you here. I just pointed you in the right direction."

"If only Sade was here to see this," I murmured.

"I'm sure she wishes she could be," he said softly.

I laughed quietly. "You know, in freshman year, when I first posted my singing videos online... people laughed. I'd walk through the halls and hear people joking about it. People would ask me to sing in the bathroom like it was some joke."

Andrew listened — he already knew this story, but I needed to say it again.

"Sade was the first person who told me I was actually good. Told me I could go somewhere. She was the reason I didn't go home and delete everything. And then somehow, we just... became best friends. She should be here."

"Shawn," Andrew said gently, "I've heard this story five times in the last two weeks." He smiled. "And I still get it."

"Sorry," I sighed.

"Don't be. It's a good story."

"I sent her tickets. I told her she could come stay on the bus for a bit. The only thing I didn't do was pay for her flight."

"Not everyone has extra plane-ticket money lying around."

"No, I have the money," I said. "She just wouldn't take it."

Andrew laughed. "Yep. That sounds like Sade."

Half of my dream was singing in this arena.
The other half was seeing her in the crowd.
Laughing with my mom after the show. Crying, maybe.
Being here for this moment.

There would be other shows — probably. Maybe even another MSG show one day.
But there is only one first time.

"I'll see you in about two hours," Andrew said, patting my shoulder.

"Yeah. I'll head to the bus for a bit."

I walked through the arena halls, buzzing with nerves and excitement, but my chest felt heavy. Like something was missing. Like someone was missing.

I stepped onto the tour bus, still lost in my thoughts. I tossed my jacket on a chair and opened the fridge.

"Pass me a 7Up?" a voice said behind me.

A voice I knew instantly. A voice that broke through everything I was feeling.

I froze. Then laughed.

"No way," I said, grabbing a water and a 7Up.

"Are you excited?" Aaliyah asked from the couch.

"Over the moon — and extremely nervous. This is MSG. Like... MSG."

"Okay, stop, you're freaking me out now."

"Lol," I muttered.

She stared. "Did you just say 'lol' out loud?"

"I think I need to rest." I laughed.

"Yep. Definitely." she grinned. "Mom and Dad took your Jeep to grab some stuff. They'll be back in twenty."

"Alright."

I headed to the back of the bus, exhaustion finally catching up with the adrenaline. My chest still ached with the thought of her not being here.

"Hey, Mendes."

I looked up.

There she was.

"Sade?"

She sat cross-legged on my bunk, wearing her grey wool thigh-high socks, black Lulu shorts, and that dark green shirt she always stole from my closet.

"Well... yeah," she said, smiling.

I didn't even think — I crossed the room in two steps and pulled her into me.

"You're here," I laughed into her hair.

"Of course I'm here," she said softly, her voice muffled against my chest.

I could feel her smiling. And she could feel mine.

Everything clicked back into place. The dream wasn't just happening.
It was happening right.

"Thank you," I whispered.

She pulled back to look at me. "You don't know how proud I am of you. I love you, Shawn. And you're going to do amazing tonight. Believe me."

She pushed my forehead gently. "Now get some rest. Also, never say 'lol' out loud again."

I laughed. "Deal."

"Goodnight, Shawn."

"Goodnight."
