A Futile Attempt

Everything was black,

The deafening silence was broken by a slight chirping sound,

At first the sound was so soft and delicate you could barely notice it,

Now it was coming closer until it was no longer a whisper but instead a mixture of beautiful melodies combined,

The noise danced in my eardrums creating vivid imagery,

Allowing my thoughts to flow like a river,

The sweet singing allowed me to see golden sunlight illuminating the land beneath my view, sparkling streams of aqua and rolling hills covered by lush green grass,

I soaked in the view enjoying the soft greenery beneath my feet and the warmth of the sunlight,

But the noise was beginning to become louder and louder as more chirping joined the chorus,

The beautiful scenery faded as it was replaced with a dark liquid,

Water swirled vigorously as I tried to keep my head afloat,

I wanted to get away from this place but as the noise became a sharp shrill the water became rougher,

I gasped and coughed as I dragged in ragged breaths as waves crashed on top of me sending me tumbling beneath the water,

My legs and arms flailed trying to reach the surface before I slipped into unconsciousness,

The sound had accumulated into what seemed to be screams of anguish,

The noise hurt my ears as it continued, bile began to rise in my throat as I was being suffocated,

No matter how hard I tried I couldn't reach the surface, using my limbs to push upwards I tried desperately to ascend,

The water was cold against my body, everything was pitch black and I could no longer see the surface,

The noise was now unbearable, I could feel myself about to slip into the darkness that was eager to consume me,

I felt as if my eardrums were going to burst as I wished for the noise to stop,

I closed my eyes and let out a scream, one that was inaudible over the piercing shriek,

Silence.

I opened my eyes again to see myself kneeling on the ground in pitch black once again,

A few feet in front of me was a single ray of light coming from above,

The rhythmic noise of fluttering wings sounded before it became silent again,

A small black spec was falling slowly in the light swinging from side to side,

As it neared I could see it was a single feather,

I got to my feet as I watched it fall gently onto the ground,

Running as fast as I could I made my way to the ray of light,

Kneeling down I looked at the feather,

It was a light shade of blue,

More vivid than any colour that I had seen before one that made me think of skies on the clearest day without a cloud in sight,

Reaching down I picked it up tenderly in my hands,

As soon as I made contact with it a voice echoed from around me,
