~Daniella~

The orientation week was over and school work began with a bang. It was Monday morning already and the school was alive with activities. Miss Patience, the house mistress, went round the rooms at 5a.m yelling on top of her voice for us to move downstairs for morning devotion. We all got up groggily and shuffled our feet as we made our way to the chapel, bibles in hand, for morning devotion.

We were all seated in the chapel, all half asleep, struggling to keep our eyes open. Miss Patience mounted the stage ringing the bell loudly into the microphone to wake us all up. She was dark skinned with a small stature, her voice was annoyingly high and she lived for attention. Students didn't seem to pay any attention to her as we were all tired from last night's social party.

"Good morning students"she said and we all muttered our replies. She didn't seem to mind though, she went on with her speech.

"As from tomorrow, a roaster will be drawn up and the prefects will be in charge of getting all the students downstairs in time. Failure to do so will result in punishment." she smiled. All the prefects muttered their disapproval which she ignored.

The rest of the devotion went on smoothly and soon we were all dressed in our uniforms seated comfortably in the cafeteria. I was seated on a table with my roommates when Moyin, the social prefect, approached me.

"Dani the principal wants to see you in his office." she didn't even wait for my response before turning back in the direction of her table.

I rushed the rest of my food, excused myself and hurried off to the principal's office.

Our principal was a stout, ageing man. He looked like someone in his late fifties. Although he looked frail, whenever he spoke his voice resounded throughout the entire room. It was rare for students to disrespect him.

I knocked lightly on the door before peering into the office. He was seated on his desk, reading a newspaper. His glasses sat firmly on the bridge of his nose. He was dressed in a white shirt and his famous blue tie.

I coughed. "Good morning sir" I had managed to call his attention. He looked up from his newspaper to look at me.

"Ah." He adjusted his glasses. "Daniella, how are you?" his words were deliberately slow. He sounded like he was trying to figure out what I was doing in his office.

"I'm fine thank you sir. Moyin said you sent for me sir."

"Ah yes I did." he paused and I waited for him to say more but he was silent.

"Sir classes will start soon" I was getting impatient. I wanted to finish this meeting on time and get to class.

"Oh yes. I sent for you because there will be a prefect meeting on Friday. I want you to inform all the teachers and students. Secondly, The devotion roasters for this term should be done and submitted to the house mistress by the end of today. That should be all for now" he resumed reading the newspaper placed in front of him.

I was about to leave his office when he called me back to hand me a permission slip. I muttered a small thank you and bolted out of the door as fast as my feet could move. My first class was biology and our biology teacher, Mr Abiola, was very strict. He always came to class very early and he made sure to punish late comers. I practically ran all the way to class so as to avoid his wrath.

By the time I got to class I was already panting heavily. I stood there for a while trying to catch my breath before knocking softly on the door. I heard the gruff voice of my teacher telling him to come in. Mr. Abiola was a short man with a lean frame. He had a bald spot at the middle of his head, there was no trace of a smile on his face. My legs turned to jelly beneath me as I walked towards him eyeing the long cane in his hands warily. I brought out the permission slip with shaky hands and showed it to him. He looked a little disappointed but he just nodded and dismissed me turning back towards the board.
