I couldn't face my Aunt and Uncle nor could I stand them. Whenever they visited my family and me, all they talked about was how 'poor and helpless' they were, begging my parents for money and quickly leaving after. My aunt was two-faced, but she was all my mom had family wise. I felt pity for her sometimes.
It was 6:51 pm and the sun was getting close to set. I closed my eyes and let everything sink in. There's just something so beautiful about this time of day. The sun's rays reflect many colors while everything turns into a Tumblr photo. I was walking around the house when I tripped on a stick and fell.
"Ow, fucK" I uttered standing up. In front of me was a huge oak tree begging for some water. I sighed and proceeded to climb up it. My overused and worn out converse shoes weren't beneficial. It took a couple of slips and scratches for me to reach a right spot to sit.
The setting sun had turned the blue sky a brilliant orange, then soft pink merging to pearl; the plum velvet of night had come out of the east, spangled with stars. The sun dropped beneath what the eyes could see, and it was as if I could get lost just sitting there. 15 minutes must've passed when I was abruptly interrupted by some leaves being moved around. Panicked I raced down the tree.
"H-Hi there!" the stranger shouted to me.
I shrieked and fell. I winced and thought that I had broken my arm. The voice followed me down the tree and jumped. "I'm so so sorry. I didn't mean to-I was just-" They looked like they were at a loss for words.
I giggled and stood up. "It's ok. But why are you in my Aunt's tree?" I said calmly. If Aunt Jamie saw you, she'd flip.
She swung down from the branches and dusted off her pants. "Well first off, I'm Brooklyn...Brooklyn James." Brooklyn stretched out her hand, and I gave her the stink eye. I was in too much pain to return the shake. She then proceeded to apologize.
"That's a...um strange way to greet someone, but I'm Evelyn. I just moved here with my sister recently, but tomorrow it'll be just me." I said as I sighed.
She put on an apologetic face and proceeded to continue. "Ah. I can't imagine how shitty it is being a younger sibling during college times. I have a brother, but he isn't in college yet. That's about it though. Parents didn't procreate much."
I scrunched my nose. "Ew no need to talk about that!" I shouted while giggling.
Brooklyn laughed, and I noticed her getting more comfortable around me.
"Well it was nice meeting you, but I have to head back. It has gotten pretty dark out since the sunset, and the last thing I want is to be engulfed by mosquitoes." Brooklyn shuddered at the thought.
I smiled and nodded my head. "I'll see you around haha." I took a few steps before getting interrupted again.
"Hey! Feel free to stop by my place anytime. You should give me your number so we can keep in touch when we're not nearby each other." Brooklyn said giving off a cheeky smile.
I frowned. "I..uh..can't give it out right now. I'll explain another time..long story." I exclaimed awkwardly.
Shortly after, I heard a crashing sound and a loud shriek coming from my place. I rushed over to the front porch and hid by the doorway. My heart was thumping so loudly I could barely hear what was going on.
"You..you asshole! Get your shit and get out! I don't even know why I agreed to let you two stay here..get out!" I peeked, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Aunt Jamie slap Kendra smack center in the face.
Tears started burning down the side of my face as I rushed inside. "Leave her alone you..you..you-"
Aunt Jamie cackled as she continued, "Whatcha gonna call me huh? You can't say anything. Otherwise, you'll be homeless too, and you know it." She said pushing me to the ground. I fell on my injured arm and winced again. There was no way I was going to let her push my sister and I around like that.
I thought the tension had died down a little after Aunt Jamie turned around, so I stood up slowly.
"This one's for you...whore!" Aunt Jamie threw a small object towards Kendra, and I lunged towards her. As soon as I reached Kendra, I felt this sharp pain on the back of my head, and I fell. Kendra started screaming and crying as she kept shaking me.
"Baby sis are you alright? Answer me! Please!" Tears started rolling down her cheeks. All I could hear was a distant ringing sound, and everything started getting blurry.
"I'm..f.fine. I got this." I stood up and immediately stumbled over my own feet. It was like watching a drunk person regain their lost balance. She grabbed me but then everything felt heavy, and my eyes started closing little by little.
"R..run" I whispered.
