- Can you hear me?
She hears the voice and wakes, disorientated, tumbling through the darkness, with no up and no down, no light and no sound, an unrelenting, bone-crushing vibration pounding her organs through every cell in her skin. Her chest is locked tight. Her eyeballs and stomach are tearing themselves free of her body. Liquid fills her nose and mouth.
Panic floods her mind and a cry of terror bursts from her amygdala, flashing along her nerves toward her adrenal glands. A heartbeat later, her body explodes in an adrenalin-fuelled super-nova and she opens her mouth to scream.
