Chapter 6

"Shouldn't they be back by now?" Carol asked me, time has past but not a single person has moved. She seemed comfortable in my arms as she leaned her head on my shoulder, her sobs had died down a little bit ago as if she had no more tears left to cry.

I looked back and gasped when I saw Shane and Glenn coming back towards the group. There was no sign of the other two and Sophia which made my heart drop.

Before Carol could get a word out Shane cut her off "they are on her trail, when they find her we gotta be ready to move so everyone get back to work." He ordered. Almost everyone did as he said, even Grayson seemed to be under his control. I, on the other hand, was not impressed. I was disgusted with just the thought of Shane.

"You stay here, keep an eye out," I told Carol giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. She gave a smile but it did not reach her eyes, not that I blamed her. When I rose to my feet Carol followed suit. Although she turned her back from everyone to keep a careful eye out for her little girl.

"Shane?" I called out, it was like my voice alone caught his attention. It was the first time I had talked to him directly and it would be the one and only time.

"Yes, Lucky?" He asked walking towards me meeting me halfway. I couldn't help but grind my teeth, at least some people attempted to learn my name and get it right.

"Lucy." I basically hissed threw my teeth, "what could I help with?" I smiled, through clenched teeth, as an attempt to play nice with him.

"How about you go back and sit with Carol and stay outta the way," he said pushing past me towards the group trying to move cars. I couldn't help but roll my eyes at his comment. It was nice to see my gut feeling was right about that guy.

"Why aren't we all out there lookin? Why are we moving cars?" Carol asked Dale softly, hoping he had a better reason than Shane. Her and I knew that Shane was wanting to get going even if we didn't find her daughter. It disgusted me even more that he would do such a thing but it didn't sound like everyone else knew his feeling towards the whole situation.

"We have to clear enough room so I can get the R.V. turned around as soon as it running. Now that we have fuel we can double back to a bypass that Glenn flagged on the map," Dale explained, it was true, with all these cars it would be idle to smuggle some gas for the road.

"Going back's going to be easier than trying to get through this mess," Shane added coming up behind us. I noticed Carol's eyes widen finally taking note to Shane's voice. I had thought she already figured as much but I was wrong.

"We're not going anywhere till my daughter gets back." She said suddenly making sure her voice was heard as she took hold of my hand. I gave her a gentle squeeze of reassurance.

"Hey, that goes without saying," Lori assured her. Lori seemed to be blind when it came to anything Shane did and it pissed me off. She didn't seem stupid but when it came to him she seemed to be in a trance. How could that be when she has such an amazing husband as Rick? Was he really that blind to the tension between them? That had to be the answer.

"Rick and Daryl, they're on it, okay? - Just a matter of time," I added softly letting go of her hand.

"Can't be soon enough for me," Andrea said butting in, "I'm still freaked out from that herd that passed us by, - or whatever you'd call it."

"Yeah, what was that? All of them just marching along like that?"

"A herd. That sounds about right. We've seen it. It's like the night camp got attacked. Some wandering pack, only fewer," Shane sighed at the memory of what happened before Grayson and I showed up. "Okay. Come on, people. We still got a lot to do. Let's stay on it. Let's go, come on."
