You worked in a small pub that your father owned in a small village where everyone knew everyone; news spread quickly, and life was people. You grew up with only your father since your mother died shortly after you were ten. It was difficult at times, but both of you made it work.

The pub you worked at was also an inn, and travelers would stay for a few nights before hitting the road again. Not all of these travelers were pleasant people; there were men who tried assaulting and had groped you. If it wasn't for your dad who looked more terrifying than he actually was, you would be in much more trouble.

Today was no different. You were trying to fend off the advances of a drunk man when a hand reaches out to stop him.

"I think you had too much to drink good sir." A man who seemed to be a little older than you intercepted the advances. You use this opportunity to go to your father so he can take care of everything. Once the drunkard is taken care of, your father thanks the man.

"Are you staying at our inn?" Your father asks

"I am actually," the stranger replies.

"How long?"

"About a week."

"A week?" You say surprised. Most people never stayed that long in this village.

"It is for work purposes, miss. You see I am a cartographer. I travel around to produce the maps for travelers."

"I see," your father cuts in, "For helping my daughter, you can stay here free of charge."

"You are too kind. You don't really need to do that though."

"Nonsense. You are the first man other than me to defend my daughter. This is the least I can do."

"If you insist then. Thank you."

"Alright then. F/n, can you show him to his room?"

"Of course, father," you say and lead the traveler to his room. While walking, you turn to him. "What is your name?"

"Marcel."

"Is being a cartographer hard? You guys make maps of places that have yet to be discovered."

"It was difficult in the beginning, but I got better with age."

"I see." Marcel hands you his key, and you unlock the door for him. What you see in his room amazes you. Papers are littered everywhere, and drawings of maps hanging on the wall."

"You only checked in this morning, didn't you?"

"Yes, I did," he says with a blush. "But I like to work fast. So that way I can see more of the undiscovered."

"You like traveling, don't you?"

"It is fun, I will admit. It is so refreshing seeing how different the world is."

"Must be nice. Seeing new lands. Traveling to new places. I hear the stories about them. All the time," you say with a sad smile. You wanted to see the world but you couldn't. You were employed by your father, and it was unheard of for unmarried women to travel alone as it was dangerous; not to mention, you were scared. You grew up in this small village. You belonged here. Traveling was something you couldn't do.

You say goodbye to Marcel and continue doing your job until your father sends you to go rest. The next day, you are sweeping the floors when you see Marcel leaving his room while looking intently at a notebook.

"Be careful," you say when you notice he was about to walk into the closed door. Marcel looks up and turns to you.

"Thank you F/n," he says before leaving. Marcel doesn't come back until that evening. You were serving food to the people when Marcel came in. He looked tired but didn't order anything except some soup. You were making your rounds when another drunkard came to harass you. Before he could do anything Marcel intercepted. This was a familiar pattern that continued until the end of stay.

Before he left though, he said he would come by and visit whenever available. You didn't believe him, but he kept true to his word. He was such a frequent visitor that your own father knew him by name and always made sure one room was available for whenever he came. You two even became really close friends even though he always was busy. He would always make time for you and tell you about his adventures and travels. You found yourself more and more wanting to travel.

During one of his visits, he requested to speak to your father alone. You complied and brought your father to him. You then excused yourself. You couldn't help but notice the way he was acting. He seemed nervous which was unusual for his character. When he comes back, he seems happier.

"Hey F/n, can we talk for a bit? Outside." You nod. Once out, he begins to tell you what he was talking about with your dad. "F/n, I want you to travel with me. I can see it in your eyes how much you want to see what the rest of world looks like. I can show you. We can see everything together."

"But my dad."

"I talked to him about it. He gave his blessings. He trusts me enough to take care of you completely."

"Does that mean you..." you trail off and he nods.

"Yes, I do have feelings for you. I promise I will make you happy."

"Look, Marcel as much as I want to see what everywhere else is like, I can't."

"But why?"

"Because this is where I belong. I am supposed to be here to run the inn with my father. I am happy being here. Maybe one day, I will come with you, but not right now."

"I understand. F/n I do hope we can travel together one day." You were grateful Marcel understood your feelings. The next day he leaves to go to the next town over. Marcel continued visiting your family, and you were more and happier.

Marcel, on the other hand, wasn't; he wanted you to come with him. He could see the longing in your eyes; he could tell you wanted to see the rest of the world. But you worked at the inn. He cared for your dad and got along well. But as long as he and that inn were there, you were never going to come with him.

During one of Marcel's visit, he invited you out. It was late, and your father permitted it since he was closing the bar for the night. Shortly after your father went to bed, you waited for Marcel to put his possessions in his room and went out for your walk.

"It has been some time now F/n," he says turning to you. "Do you think you can come with me this time?"

"Look Marcel. I just can-" you were cut off when you heard someone screaming fire. You could smell the smoke and turn to where it was coming from. A building you knew so well was ablaze. Your inn. "Father!" You scream and run to the inn. You were about to run in, but Marcel held you back.

"I will go get him," he says and grabs a bucket of water and dousing himself in it before running in. You do your part and help those who escaped the flames. Minutes later, you see Marcel come out with your father who is unconscious.

"Are you okay?" You ask as you help hold down your father. You begin crying when your father cracks his eyes open.

"F/n," he says with a raspy voice. "You are okay right?"

"Don't worry about me now. We need you to get treated right now," you say wiping the ash from his face. Marcel helps you tend to your dad. You prayed for your dad to be okay. The next day, you spend the night at a clinic with your father.

Marcel was with you where your father was lying in bed.

"I can tell my time is coming F/n." he coughs out.

"Don't say that dad. You are going to get better. You have to," you say. Your father turns to Marcel.

"You promised to take care of my daughter. You must take care of her like you promised."

"Mr L/n," Marcel says with tears threatening to come out.

"Father," you sniffle. Your father went to sleep shortly; a sleep where he didn't wake up from. After his funeral, Marcel did keep his promise to take care of you. You had agreed to go traveling with him. You soon begin smiling after mourning for your father. He was thankful for that. He didn't want to put you through so much pain. Especially after starting the fire himself that claimed your inn and your father's life.
