you were nine years old, yet you were still able to be in the headquarters of the infamous group, overwatch. you heard stories about them from your mother before she passed a few months before you were found by a pretty british lady with short hair that flopped over her left eye in a fringe.

you were so lucky for them, and the fact that they let you stay. lena, who went by the alias of 'tracer' she told you a few weeks after you arrived. she said to you that it took a lot of bribing to soldier 76 (who d.va, or hana, referred to as dad), to let you stay with them. eventually, however, the gruff man gave in.

you'd seen him a couple times, but you never spoke a word to him. the truth was, you were slightly afraid of him. you saw his scarred face once, when he thought he was alone. he saw you as he turned around, and you caught a glimpse of his beautiful ocean blue eyes, yet before you could stop him, his visor was back on and he was gone.

he was scary to you sometimes, as a nine-year-old who lost any sort of parents you had, you looked up to him however.

one week, lena, angela, genji, reinhardt, d.va, and torbjorn, were all sent out on a mission to king's row in england. zenyatta (one of your favourite people you'd ever met) would have gone with them, but due to the unmistakable amount of hate towards omnics there, lena denied bringing him, meaning you'd get to spend more time with him!

soldier 76 (who never revealed his real name to you, or to anyone else, however angela almost let it slip once), was also there with you at the time of this mission. if anything, you'd want to get closer to him too. more importantly, you wanted to break the tough exterior he had around him, preventing him from getting close to anyone in fear of what happened with gabriel.

you had the power to roam around freely, for the most part. you were allowed in everyone's room, except for soldier 76. or, perhaps you were allowed in there, but you were too afraid to actually ask him. he was strict, and he terrified you with that visor on his face. all you wanted was to see his eyes again, and be able to help heal him of his grudges and grievances he may have had, in any way you could.

soldier 76 had a habit of wanting to give you a piggyback ride.

he couldn't help it. he was always known as the dad of overwatch, even back when he was commander jack morrison of the original overwatch team. he couldn't help wanting to treat you like his own child, though he never had one of his own. he knew how hard it must have been to lose everything, even though you masked it pretty well.

once, he had seen you wear a flower crown. you were walking around, accompanied by an actual walking zenyatta (who was also wearing a flower crown). he couldn't help but feel like the omnic monk was more of a parent to you than he was, and hana even knew this. before she left, she had told him, "this time, don't be stupid, dad. go talk to y/n, he/she really wants to talk to you" and with that, she was gone.

he needed to talk to you. he never understood why he was so afraid to. you were nine, and as hana said, you wanted to talk to him. why was he so afraid? was he afraid of rejection? afraid of you not liking him? he couldn't seem to listen to himself think anymore, his thoughts were now just getting stupid and he never thought he would think it himself.

he was the dad to everyone, even reinhardt, who was older than him. why couldn't he seem to be the dad to you as well? maybe it was because you were nine? whatever the reason, he couldn't bring himself to doing it.

he was proud of you. he always was, even when you walked in the doorway, when he didn't know your name, he was proud of you. lena told him your backstory before she left, and he never could relate more to a child than he did with you. despite your personality of bright and bubbly, and his a gruff and rude one, he related to you. he never understood how you were so strong, he never understood how you didn't break down in tears because of your family dying. he could barely withstand gabriel and ana, and they never even died, and he bawled himself to sleep every night for weeks. you never cried.

today was the day you worked up the courage to finally talk to soldier 76. it had been months since you arrived at headquarters, and the fact that he saw you as a regular around had been nice. plus lna didn't have to deal with his complaining about a kid in the base, of course he did at first, but after he saw your face he couldn't help but want to hug you like his own child though he had none of his own.

you had sat in the kitchen of overwatch headquarters at around six in the morning. before genji left, he told you if you wanted to talk to him privately than to be in the kitchen at six in the morning, when he went to get his cup of morning coffee, every morning. nothing changed.

the light switch flipped on, and your eyes flashed open. "y/n?" soldier 76's gruff voice rang out from behind you, it was coming from the doorway. "why are you up this early?" you shrugged, "big brother genji told me i could talk to you in the mornings."

"big brother genji told you this?" he asked you, and he saw you nod. he sighed, "alright, do you want some coffee?" you smiled, as you nodded again. "black coffee please!" he chuckled, "good taste, kiddo."

"you know, soldier 76,"

"dad. call me dad."

"you know dad, i really regret not talking to you earlier."

"me too kiddo, me too."
