One plus one equals two
We were taught that in kindergarten
We have that equation branded into our minds
Even our subconscious knows it
But somewhere down the line, one plus one equals three
Somehow, in our beds, that new equation was born
And I remember
I remember when I was taught a new set of mathematics
Fractions were the milliseconds your fingertips touched my skin then left it
Absolute numbers were the smirks you gave me as I begged you to stop
But youre only in my dreams
You hide behind the chalkboard with the Expo Marker
You want to make sure I understand, that I know this math better than the one they taught me in school
Ax+b=c
You write the algebraic expressions on my face, on my legs, in between my thighs
But math was never my strongest subject
I excelled at Language Arts
I tell you of Oscar Wilde and quote Jack London
You stare at me
I sing Sylvia Plath and map out The Chronicles of Mars
I eat the Golden Apples of the Sun and I draw on you all my essays till you're an Illustrated Man
I push you away with Poseidon's Trident and shoot you with Katniss's bow and arrow
I carve a smile on you like the Joker and I say "I will no longer be your Harley Quinn"
I say what I should have said a long time ago, when you looked at me like you owned me
"No."
