Lily had been relaxing by the lake with her friends, trying hard not to think about the events of that morning and just enjoy the sun and watch the squid splash about in the water.

Marlene and Emmeline were discussing some 6th year boys while Alice, Dorcas and Hestia were talking about the exam they just had.

Lily was content, simply listening to her friends talk and trying to ignore the gaze of a messy haired, hazel eyed boy sitting at the other side of the lake.

Her tranquility was broken however when she heard a commotion from behind her. Glancing towards the beach tree she noticed both Sirius and James had risen.

As she approached the scene she could hear Severus spit out a stream of hexes and swear words so foul she was surprised her ears hadn't began to bleed.

As she pushed through the crowd of students she heard James shout at Severus to wash his mouth out.
He pointed his wand at him.
“Scourgify!” he said and pink soap bubbles appeared in Severus' mouth.

The froth foamed at his lips making him gag and choke. Lily felt betrayed and angry, more than she had ever felt. It wasn't just Severus she was angry at anymore, all though she was livid at him for everything he'd done lately, but James had made her a promise.

Despite all their petty differences she had trusted him, and she couldn't help feel now, looking onto the scene as if that had meant nothing to him.

She stared on, not able to move, as her former best friend choked on the curse of the boy she believed she could rely on.

Suddenly the anger overpowered the betrayal and although she felt no sympathy for the snake, she wouldn't let Potter get away with this.

“Leave him ALONE!” Lily screamed at James and Sirius and as they turned to look at her that prat messed up his hair in that awful conceited way of his.

What infuriated her even further was the way he changed his voice as he spoke to her, was that supposed to impress her somehow?

“All right, Evans?” he asked, they way he said it, so casually as if they were two friends meeting for a drink, her anger was bubbling so much now, that if steam started coming out of her ears she would think it was completely normal.

“Leave him alone,” Lily repeated, giving him the worst look of dislike she could, but even as her anger smoldered, she couldn't help but think she didn't really feel that much hatred at all, just anger and a bit of sadness.

“What’s he done to you?” she continued but they both knew it was a stupid question, she could tell he knew what she really meant; he's done nothing to you, I told you this was my fight.

And she meant it. How could he not understand that she wanted to deal with this herself? She didn't need someone else standing up for her, it was her fight, why couldn't he respect that? All he was going to do was make everything worse.

“Well,” he said, and his voice still so casual, like he didn't even care, “it’s more the fact that he exists, if you know what I mean. . . .”

Lily knew now that he was only trying to annoy her. He couldn't see the bigger picture. He thought all she wanted to do was defend Snape, but he was wrong and too impulsive and arrogant to even attempt to see her point of view.

Lily felt like screaming as many people around them laughed, Sirius and Peter included. How was this even funny?

“You think you’re funny,” she growled at him, “But you’re just an arrogant, bullying toerag, Potter. Leave him alone.” her insults were taken off the top of her head, she knew that technically he wasn't exactly a bully but the things Severus had told her about him, which she had shrugged off as lies had come back to her.
