Sara wasn't sure who was more surprised, her to see Dr. Burke visiting Lily or him to see that she was. He looked good out of his work clothes. His jeans fit him even nicer, than his pants and his navy long sleeve knit shirt brought out his blue eyes. Why did she notice things like his eyes or the way his jeans fit?

It was amusing when he mentioned the wallet. She didn't correct him, because she wanted to be judged based on her own performance and not her relative. Still it bothered her he was judging her unfavorably, and she didn't know why. She had even asked Tim if she had been meeting expectations, and he emphatically said she was exceeding them. Perhaps the younger brother didn't like her, but he wasn't always giving off negative vibes. At the hospital, he was almost pleasant.

The way he treated her didn't help quell her growing crush on him. Aside from him looking hot, it was the way he treated his patients that made her heart race. He showed genuine compassion and caring. She especially liked the way he was with children. Not just his own, but he was a wonderful father.

She stared at his new screensaver too often. He sat on a pumpkin with Jack on his lap and Bridget's arms around his neck. They were smiling in the shining sun. He had sunglasses on the top of his head, as if he had carelessly taken them off his eyes for the picture. She imagined his wife asking him to lift his shades, before she clicked.

He was happily smiling at his wife, which made her stomach pang with jealousy. Dread washed over her, maybe he knew she was attracted to him and was trying to discourage her.

She arrived a little later than planned for dinner with her aunt and uncle. She told Poppy all about Lily and talked about her visit, including their game of likes and dislikes.

Poppy laughed. "I agree with your biscuit answer. I remember a time when we couldn't keep enough in the house."

"Was I a bother?" Sara asked, concerned.

"Oh darling, never! We couldn't love you more if you were our own."

Sara knew Poppy hoped that Sara would have children and make her a grandmother.

Uncle David asked if she still liked her job. As she answered, she thought about the doctor and the erratic way he treated her. Then she added, "I'm still trying to figure out who would have had the questionable ethics. Not any of the Burkes."

"You know, I can't elaborate. As I said before, just don't mix your personal and professional life."

Sara laughed, "I have no personal life. My newest friend is a five-year-old with a brain tumor."

Poppy asked, "Did you say Burke?"

"Yes, the doctors are two brothers."

"Oh! I've met their mother at hospital events. Isn't she English?"

"Yes, I've been told by her little granddaughter that I sound like Granny." Sara smiled.

Poppy said, "She is a very nice woman."

"They are a fine family," David confirmed. "Sara, dear, just use your head. I trust you."

The following morning, it surprised Sara when the doctor's children appeared with their grandmother, who didn't have an English accent. Bridget had scraped her knee, and Sara happily offered to take care of the injury. The little girl talked the whole time about how she fell and how Jack had tipped over his cereal at breakfast. Bridget thought Jack was trouble. Sara found her entertaining and as she finished, she noticed the doctor was watching them with an odd smirk on his face. His mouth was smiling, but his eyes weren't. Yet it gave her a feeling which was not appropriate, seeing as he was a married man and a father.

When Bridget saw her father she ran to him, and he effortlessly scooped her up. She gave him a big hug. "Daddy, Sara fixed my booboo. She's my friend."

Sara's heart leapt at the affection between father and daughter. He looked her in the eyes and softly said, "Thank you."

Those two words caused a strong physical response within Sara that stopped right at her center.

Get a grip! He's married. Married! His mother-in-law's just outside this room.

Sara heard the grandmother ask who she was.

Bridget said, "Sara. She's my friend. She sounds like Granny."

The older woman smiled. "Does she? How nice!"

On Monday, the retired Dr. Burke came to visit. The first thing Sara noticed was that both sons looked like their father. He was old to be Dr. Shaw and the younger doctor's father. Definitely not for Tim, since he was about the same age as Poppy and David.

Everyone knew their father, and he talked with all the staff and even some patients. He was jovial, and obviously Tim's father.

He approached Sara. "I've heard wonderful things about you, Miss."

"Abbott. Sara Abbott."

He smiled at her as if it amused him. Then he asked, "Tell me what brought you to Maine."

"I came at age fourteen. My mother was sick and her sister lived... actually still lives in Maine. When my mum passed, my aunt and her husband cared for me. They're my family."

"Have you gone back to England?"

"Yes, I stopped in London on my way to and from Sierra Leone."

"Really? I'm interested to hear all about it."

She smiled, "Perhaps another time, I have patients."

She liked the man, but he had a strange smile that held a hint of sadness or was it nostalgia? She remembered the doctor's comment in the supermarket and agreed that the Burke family seemed to have secrets.

Dr. Burke knew she was visiting Lily regularly. When Lily came home after her first course of the new treatment, Sara visited more. In just a short time, her family had woven their way into Sara's heart. Lily had an older sister, Daphne and Sara spent time with her too. Daphne worried about her sister, which Sara understood, because she remembered when her own mother was sick.

The doctor acted differently towards her from one day to the next. Because she loved her job, she put up with him. She was friendly with Emily the PA from obstetrics and on Fridays they went out to lunch together. Emily liked Dr. Shaw, but didn't care much for Dr. Tardiff. When she mentioned that Dr. Burke was hot and cold towards her, Emily assured her not to take it personally. Sara had trouble taking it any other way.

Joe was on his way to Maine, and Sara had agreed to let him stay at her apartment. She had her old crush who was now married and her new crush who was also married. She needed to keep away from married men, but was surrounded by them.
