Sara took two days off, because there was so much she needed to do. She couldn't stay away and arrived at the office just before lunch.

When she found Nick, she said, "I have time to take you to lunch before my appointment."

"Appointment?" She responded by wiggling her unpolished fingers. "Women." He scowled but was kidding. "I've got one more patient, and he's one of yours."

Sara turned when she heard a familiar voice. "Why can't I see Sara? I want Sara. No offense, doc."

Nick smiled. "None taken, but Sara is off today."

"But she's right here," he said, as he coughed.

"Sara is just loitering today."

"I'll come hold your hand Mr. Michaud and make sure the stethoscope isn't too cold."

"Yes, please. Now if I were forty years younger."

"She's taken," Nick blurted and winked at Sara.

"Taken by who? Last time I was here, she said she'd marry me."

"Oh, she did. Did she? Funny she told me the same thing. Let's have a listen shall we."

"Wait, a minute, doc! Are you telling me you stole my best gal?"

"Afraid so." Nick smiled like he won a contest.

"Looks like you got the girl just like your father before you."

"Why don't you two stop fighting over me, so we can listen to his lungs." Sara took Nick's stethoscope from him.

After listening while Mr. Michaud dutifully breathed, she turned to Nick. "There."

He took his stethoscope back and listened for abnormal sounds that showed pneumonia in the older man's lungs

He took his stethoscope back and listened for abnormal sounds that showed pneumonia in the older man's lungs. Lord, he thought, who knew sharing a stethoscope could be so intimate, but working with her so closely was incredible.

He finished documenting his visit while Sara charmed the old man. She explained he should call if he wasn't better in a week. Nick said, "We'll give you an appointment for a week from today just to make sure your lungs are clear."

"Can I see Sara?"

"I'm afraid not, she'll be off that day too."

"Are you really marrying the doc?" he asked, pointing to Nick. Sara nodded her head. "When?"

In unison, they responded, "In two days!"

Sara said, "Why not make an appointment for ten days from now when I'm back."

"So you'll be Sara Burke?"

Sara smiled. "Yes, I will." Then she opened the door to let Mr. Michaud out of the exam room.

Nick pulled her into his arms. "And I'll be the happiest man alive. Coming to work with my wife."

He kissed her, only to be interrupted by the opening of the door.

"You two aren't my patient! Do you have to? I'll be seeing enough of you two kissing this weekend."

Sara and Nick laughed and kissed again

Sara and Nick laughed and kissed again. Sara thought back to when she met Mr. Michaud on her first day. She would never have dreamed she'd be marrying the disheveled, always late Dr. Burke.

Sometimes life can be unexpected, she thought as she took Nick by the hand and they left the exam room together.
