“How was it yesterday?” Mum asked as I sat at the bar.

“It was alright.” I shrugged taking a bite of an apple.

“Meet anyone nice?” she said cleaning the dishes.

“Yeah I guess” I said as the door bell rang.

“Ill gets it” my mum said wiping her hands off on a dish towel.

“No it’s for me. Im going out with a friend, Michael. I met him last night. Ill is home later.” I smiled getting up and grabbing my tube.

She kina just stood their stunned, Im not sure if it was because I was going out or if it was with a boy.

I walked to the door and opened it to see Michael standing there. He was wearing black skinny jeans and a flannel shirt with the sleeves cut off. His blue hair went in 20 different directions like he hadn’t even brushed it.

“Hello there” he smiled

“Don’t make this weird.” I laughed walking out and pulling the door shut.

“What? Weird? No im completely normal” he stated

“Yeah okay. Says the guy with blue hair” I said looking up at him.

“I like colorful hair” he shrugged opening the door for me.

I just laughed and got in placing my tank on the floor board between my legs.

He got in the drivers seat and started the car.

“So where are we going?” I asked as we drove a little ways.

“Somewhere” he smiled keeping his eyes on the road.

“That gave me absolutely no information whatsoever” I laughed shaking my head.

“Well if you must know Miss Irwin were going to the park.” he said looking over at me.

“The park? How am I supposed to live life to the fullest at the park?” I asked rolling my eyes

“You will see” he said turning his attention back to the road.

We got to the park finally. There weren’t many people there, granted it was like 10 in the morning.

“M’lady” he said opening the door for me.

I laughed and got out following him to a tree.

‘And were here” he smiled proudly

“A tree?” I asked confused

“Yes a tree isn’t it great” he asked looking up at it.

“Um I guess” I said looking up with him.

“Do you know what’s so special about this tree?” he asked sitting down

“Isn’t it the oldest tree in this park?” I asked looking down at him.

“Yes that is true. But it’s filled with termites.” he smiled

“Then I am not sitting beside it Michael” I said shaking my head.

“Then sit on my lap Aspen. I won’t let them bite you.” he joked

“I am not sitting on your lap. I hardly know you.” I laughed

“Just come here and stop being so stubborn.” he said opening his arms

I sighed and gave in sitting on his lap as his arms sat on either side of me.

“Now as I was saying, this tree is filled with termites and it’s the oldest tree here. What does that tell you?” he asked as I sat there looking out to the lake.

“Um that it’s a strong tree?” I asked confused at where this was going

“Yes, a very strong tree. It’s being eaten up but still continues to stand and live. It still continues to bring happiness to the birds that live in it or the squirrels. It still brings shade to the people that sit under it.” He said continuing

“What does this have to do with me Michael?” I asked still confused

“You’re like this tree, Aspen. Even though you are sick, you still bring happiness to people. You are still important.” he whispered in my ear.

We sat there in silence after that, not saying anything, I just sat there on his lap watching the birds in the water swim, as he sat there leaning against the tree saving me from the termites. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence like you have with out stretched family members. It was a beautiful silence, like we were taking in all of the beauty in the world.

For once in a long time I saw what beauty was.
